Interview with Tarn Adams

I'd like to start by extending a HUGE thank you on behalf of everyone at the interview and the Society of Physics Students to Tarn for taking the time to give us an excellent talk and answer our questions.

This is a talk and interview with Tarn Adams by the Penn State Society of Physics Students. Craftvideoship is of questionable quality, but the content contained within is great. First part is a history leading up to Dwarf Fortress. Second part is how DF works. Third part is mostly commentary on the state of games today.

Ooh, this is awesome. Thanks to everyone involved with setting that up!
DF is 381,764 lines of code long right now? Pretty cool stuff.

Thanks for posting this!
I think this is the first time we've seen this presentation format, and it's great! The details about the world gen algorithms were really interesting, and I liked Toady's view on community interaction.

We got a tentative release date: March.  :)
So we can begin expecting the release in May :)

That's insane! I'd have thought it'd be much higher, seriously, what with how complex it is!

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Nah, it's probably much longer. He only searched for semicolons in a big .c file. Loops and function declarations don't use semicolons, for instance, and there are probably a few billion of those in there.

For loops do use semicolons. Function declarations (prototypes) use semicolons too. Definitions don't, but those are copy-pasted anyway. Also, he searched the project, not one file. It's not a perfect metric, but then, number of lines never is.

Yeah, I figure the if statements and cases it didn't count are probably balanced out by the commented-out sections it counted, more or less.

Shouldn't it be videocraftship?

I've said this before when I saw the NYT article with Tarn's picture, and I'll say it again: I am so surprised that Tarn doesn't have a beard. A large, bushy beard.

I don't know if it's the length of the lecture or an effect of the audience, but this is probably the most comprehensive Tarn Adams interview I've seen.

Our forumites are a diverse lot.  Among our ranks I've counted women who cannot grow a beard, children too young to grow a beard, and men who have decided that the current unfasionability of beards means that shaving should be part of their daily ritual.  This has taught me one great lesson.

It's not the neckbeard on the outside that counts, it's the neckbeard on the inside.

Some day I shall have a beard that I can weave jewelry into and one which I will be able to tuck into my belt. Basically what the dwarves in The Hobbit film should have had. Some day...
