Funeral
« on: December 13, 2012, 10:37:38 pm »

Very simple topic, but when a dwarf dies people can gather around his coffin, and mourn.  Family or close friends may visit this coffin from time to time to leave some sort of momentum.

I think that dwarves are the kind of creature that mourns death with a barrel of alcohol.

Some sorta ceremony that in peace times could be used to midgitate the unhappiness of losing a loved one a bit more then just that they got buried would be nice.  That way when great old gramps 'knows everybody' dies of old age in his sleep, the fortress isn't suddenly choking the life outta each other.

Maybe Toady can add pianos and some sort of wake ceremony... then we would need a dwarf with piano-playing skill... then we could have:

The only instrument I can imagine a dwarf playing is the drum or some one pitched horn.

Let's not forget the stone harps.

I like this idea. One of several events you could do in the fort perhaps, especially with taverns hopefully coming and music eventually being useful.

This one would target friends, and family of the dwarf.

Drums are an obvious choice, and there are a wide variety to pick from!
Horns make a lot of sense, and you have a wide variety again, perhaps some magical? Call to arms, rally cry when facing tough odds etc.
Vocals, are a definite must, I can see several dwarf songs being used.
Bigger stringed instruments could be used, a harp would work imho.
Lute and Fiddle would be pushing it but I could see an odd dwarf using them :), certainly other races.

I think organized funerals would be kind of clumsy in fort mode unfortunately.  Imagine what would happen if 20 dwarves got killed in a siege?  Do the funerals get arranged immediately upon death?  Upon burial?  That could cause a disruption in critical industries for a while.  If you're waiting for all of the relatives to arrive like a training session, it could take a while to get situated...

As a whole though I like the idea and would like to see something like it go in.  If nothing else, maybe have dwarves visit the graves of family and friends occasionally?  Perhaps they'd prioritize this until they've done it once or twice, and afterward whenever they go on break they might hang around the coffin for a little while.

maybe it could be like... a job?  With the death of the family member  enabling that 'labour' for a little while.  That way the player could designate whatever he wants as say a funeral zone, and then 'que' the job of funeral so that mourning dwarves show up.

When dwarves are really sad, going to see a nice tomb should make them glad that someone else is dead and they're not. That's the dwarfy way.

Urist McNotDead would already get a positive thought from the death of a grudged dwarf. Desecrating grudges' graves makes sense once grudges are more than people you don't like talking to.

I actually really like this idea, but the only problem is where would the funeral take place and what conditions exactly have to be met to have a funeral? Obviously you would need a dwarf who died, but what else would make the funeral trigger?

I'd imagine that a funeral can only trigger if a zone is designated for funerals (using a zone designation would count chairs in the designation for example), if a dwarf had the job enabled for funerals (I'm not sure at this time what the job would be called), and if one of the following conditions are met:

A) The dwarf who died has at least 5+ family members and/or close friends.
B) If more than five dwarfs died in a siege (this funeral would then trigger a time after the siege) (attendants would be random and/or relatives and/or close friends of the deceased)
C) The dwarf who died was a hero or renounced for something (ex. killing a megabeast) (would bring the most dwarfs in for mourning)
Optional D) The dwarf was a significant Noble (aka 'Attend Party')

Additionally, funerals could be held without the body in-case it cannot be retrieved.

I think the benefit of having funerals would be is that they would add more depth to a game, and it could have a little room for more fun, like for example bad timing.
