Weren't the cubists the earliest expressionsts? I might be wrong her, but I usually just lump them together.

now you're calling them impressionists  :P
cubists were the first to dabble with non-figurativism. expressionism can be traced back to some mannerists like el greco, some post-impressionists like munch, and then the fauvists. that is, expressionism was a characteristic of these movements\artists. expressionism as a movement was born with the german die brücke and blau reiter groups, commonly lumped together as early expressionists, as oposed to the later expressionists from the neue sachlichkeit. you might be thinking of abstractionism, which was born with cubism, which painted figures abstractly, and then taken to the next level by the expressionist painter kandinsky from the blau reiter group who painted the first fully abstract paintings

Fixed it. If I ever have the time, maybe I'll go to some art history lectures in the summer - I really need to learn this stuff.

I don't have much background in fine arts history either, but I know some of the people so far in this thread.  Especially Beksinski.  He's pretty amazing.  I've also seen some of John Bauer's stuff around before, but seeing more of it here has really kindled an interest in him.  I love his style.  Looking at stuff like that makes me think what I'm doing.  Really want to do artsier stuff with my own skills now.

I'll go ahead and throw in a really talented concept artist.

Spoiler: Keith Thompson (click to show/hide)

Images pulled somewhat at random.  Check out his gallery here.  His website is really nice.  I especially like that he includes some flavor text for every image.

Ilya Repin

Wow, I was thinking of posting that third picture, but I couldn't figure out who made it.

This is a fantastic thread for culturally interested yet lazy boor like me.  So much art I know now!

That painting has a pretty interesting backstory. It's the reply of the Zaporozhye Cossacks to the Sultan's request for them to surrender without resistance.

One of Repin's most famous paintings, of Tsar Ivan the Terrible and his son:

This thread doesn't seem to have a whole lot of interest, but I may continue to randomly post in it from time to time.

This Russian guy on the internet does some art for black metal bands (mostly of controversial political affiliation, but that doesn't really bother me anymore)

There's also this guy Andrei Bouzikov whose done a lot of artwork for metal bands.
