The "Great" art thread! (NSFW!)
« on: December 13, 2012, 05:27:49 pm »

I don't think we have one of these. As with most of the threads I start willy-nilly, I don't expect this will get that far.. Basically, what style of art do you like the best? What's your favorite piece, anything you'd like to share, yadda yadda, etc. Basic forum rules apply, put pictures in spoilers, you know the drill.

Now I'm not some kind of art.... person, so I don't know any terms and whatnot, but:
I like German expressionism

I also think these old old photographs/daguerreotypes are pretty darn neat:

Anything by Zdzislaw Beksinsky

Or Henry Darger.  He drew/traced naked little girls with penises getting killed in horrible ways, which is why I'm not posting anything.  It's also kind of difficult to get high resolution images of his stuff. I found something high resolution and worksafe.

You guys have... interesting tastes.

My experience with art is mainly limited to comics, but I know some with art styles I adore.

Take for example Dresden Codak, if I can take a few good examples. He's pretty damn good at his character design and layout. Also the pastel tones of he likes to use in his art style are something I've really fallen in love with. Though his artwork kind of varies a lot in quality, especially with the earlier stuff in comparison to the later stuff... I really wish he updated that comic more often.

Most comics tend to have simpler artwork since you have to churn out massive amounts of panels, but there are some which have great more complex artwork out there, just recently in the comic thread someone linked to Unsounded which is from time to time brilliant in terms of art. There's also Lackadaisy, and I could probably remember a few others.

That's just the kind of junk I like, you guys can go back to sharing your naked surrealist corpses now.

After reading this, I just feel kinda hideous.  :P
And I'm really not an art person, so that's probably why I don't really see much of a difference between all these guys.

They are different guys, right?

What, you don't like looking drawings of corpses in varying states of decay?  You're the bizarre one.

In all seriousness, I know my taste in art is a little "strange", but I can't help myself.  I like the stuff I like because it evokes strange emotions in me.  I especially like Beksinski because of the scale of some of his paintings.  I've always been fascinated by absurdly vast or immense things, especially when there's a sense of the unreal or the fantastic.
