I don't think the stone giants are even meant to be seen as entirely living things. They're more like temporary forces of nature, a physical metaphor for and representation of the power of mountains. They wake up, smash each other, and grow dormant again.

Unless someone started mountaintop strip-mining the entire range of the Misty Mountains, they probably won't care what you do.

Good luck is all I have to say to that endeavor.

Just went and saw The Hobbit a few days ago. I thought it was very charming!

It seems to have a slightly different tone to the LOTR films. I think it's lighter and there's more slapstick. It seems as though they're going to be aiming these films toward younger audience. I for one am glad they went for this approach. I love LOTR, but it can be a bit... er... "grandiose". The Hobbit follow a slightly more low-key story.

There are plenty of new characters to explore, and it's great that we get to meet some dwarves other that Gimli!

The dwarves are rather dwarfy aren't they?

I for one think the "Stone" in "Stone Giant" is less a categorization (As the "Cave" in "Cave Troll") as simply an adjective. The things are giant, and they are made of stone, hence "Stone Giant". I for one see them as a something like the essence of elemental earth.

Didn't Tolkien do an illustration of them, though?

I loved the movie. I am not entirely sure why the Dwarfs didn't just stay in Moria after they won the battle though >.>
I mean, Gimli thought it was a safe place in LotR, which was 60 (?) years later, so why were they all homeless and sad?

All of their friends died.

The Dwarves were all struck with melancholy.

It's a miracle they didn't start a tantrum spiral.

So who reclaimed Moria afterwards?

Well in the books they didn't reclaim it because someone said they saw Durin's Bane, so they decided it would be a bad idea to try to fight a balrog. Additionally, they felt that the damage dealt to the goblins was sufficient vengeance, so they decided to leave it. Balin does go on to try and reclaim Khazad Dum (and does a pretty good job), but as is seen in LOTR his expedition eventually all died to goblins and the demon.

In the movie, they portrayed the battle as a tremendous loss for the dwarves and just said the dwarves were too sad to continue their assault.

More like they had taken so many losses that another assault would be too much.
