From what I can gather this was some sort of an issue?
Wait, why do you guys even have ads? I was under the impression that the US didn't have free tv anymore or something.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Pay for TV and watch ads. One of the main reasons I don't really watch TV.

We pay the provider to send the signal to our homes.
The companies producing the signal simply send it out.  In a few locations you can get a good signal off the antenna; although I hear the switch to digital frequencies messed up the old setups. . .

In the civilized world, they broadcast everywhere and you are free to pick up the signal at your own leisure. To cover costs they include advertisements in these broadcasts.
The alternative is paying for specific broadcasts that do not include ads. These broadcasts are often a lot more content specific, so at least you get exactly what you pay for, as opposed to free channels that give you a mixed bag.

The thing is, in the US a large number of channels aren't broadcast at all, so the ad profits go entirely towards programming and distribution is handled by a third party. These are usually pretty cheap and you can get around 100 for about 20 USD/mo. We also have channels that are subscription only, mostly movie channels, these don't have ads but are significantly more expensive.

THIS WOULD AFFECT ME MORE IF I ACTUALLY WATCHED TV AS SOMETHING MORE THEN INDIVIDUAL EPISODES ON THE INTERNET.

Yeah, I'd go with #1. Essentially that's the divide between subscription cable (HBO, for example) and broadcast (CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX) in the US. I guess the difference is that there *is* a #2 option in the US, versus no choice in the UK.
IT WOULD BE MORE EFFICIENT TO PAY FOR IT VIA INCOME TAX LIKE MOST THINGS BUT THAT WOULD MAKE THE DAILY MAIL EVEN MORE ANNOYED

AND NOTHING OF VALUE WAS LOST

THIS IS MY FEELINGS PRETTY MUCH EXACTLY. ALSO, I GUESS IT'S GOOD FOR WHEN I'M AROUND RELATIVES WHO HAVE THE TV TURNED ON. WHY THE HELL ARE THEY DOING IT NOW, EXACTLY?

AS OF TODAY, ADVERTISERS IN THE US MAY NO LONGER RUN COMMERCIALS THAT ARE WAY LOUDER THAN THE TV SHOW THEY ACCOMPANY. REJOICE, NO MORE BEING WOKEN UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING NIGHT BY COMMERCIALS.

ALL POSTS IN THIS THREAD MUST EMPLOY ALL CAPS AND BOLD, SO SAYS I, METALSLIMEHUNT THE OMNIMAGNANIMOUS.

THANK NINE FUCKING HELLS. GRANTED, THIS IS ONLY IN THE US FROM AS FAR AS I'M AWARE, WHICH IS A TAD DISAPPOINTING BECAUSE LAST TIME I WATCHED TV A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO IT WAS STILL IN FULL EFFECT IN SWEDEN. HOPEFULLY THEY'LL EVENTUALLY START ENFORCING IT OVER HERE TOO.

Because it's America, that's why! We are ALL about some buying and selling shit. And marketing. And focus groups. And especially buying a product because their commercial was humorous rather than a Pareto-optimal price point or based on the attributes of the product itself. Truly, we are a living testament to capitalism being a fucking bad joke.

We even have an annual sporting event and holiday built around TV ads. It's called the Super Bowl. People get together to watch million-dollar 30-second spots, then mingle and talk while some shitty football game goes on in the background, until the next commercial break.

People do not watch the Super Bowl for the football, because as much as some people like it, it is a rather boring sport when the tackle is part of everything. They watch it for the commercials. Youtube even collects them and has people vote 'the best super bowl commercial'

Hockey or rugby on the otherhand, are not entierly built on the concept of the tackle (and throwing), so when someone gets hit hard theres actually a reason for it. Probably.
