Start of the economy
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:21:00 am »

Ok, seems there are some questions about the start of the economy.

So i tested over my last few fortresses. First one few, with each caravan that came in i traded lots of stuff.

This last one, all i ever traded away was stuff that didn't count towards my fortresses wealth, grey stuff that goblins and kobolds left behind. mostly narrow leather, as i melted the iron stuff.

Now, i have 10 artifacts, 2 were the kind that don't give you legendary dwarves, and two were from children, so i have 6 legendary crafters from those. Plus my mason is legendary just from normal work, and my stonecrafter as well.

So, needless to say, i have a heck of alot of wealth, alot more than i have in other fortresses that got their economy realy quickly.

Usually my economy starts fast, as i tend to pick heavily forrested areas and get a guy carving wooden crossbows right off the bat. And that's what i tend to trade with (cept elves, i trade stone crafts and other stone items with them)

So, my opinion is that trading wealth is what starts the economy. not accumulating wealth.

Course, i still haven't gotten the economy started yet.

I sent the last two (human and dwarven) caravans packing loaded with master bows and leather and stone goods.

I've already got a hoardmaster, not sure what that means though. And had two goblin invasions.

For me, bring on the goblins but screw the pompous countess/consort precious people invasion.

Like I need someone demanding an Electrum Throne?

Bend over honey here it comes (or maybe I'll just turn economy off)

Well, personally i like know the cost of things i am buying and selling. And the thought of dwarves buying and selling stuff.

Adds more realism.

But the comment was more towards trying to figure out how the economy starts, as it seems to be a mystery.

I've never turned it off, if it affects the dwarfs ability to appraise, that's another story.  I'll see tomorrow.

its not a game, its a loyalty test.  only a dirty red would turn the economy off.  by feeding the demands of nobles, we are being trained to serve the every whim of our burgois betters.

Strike a blow for smaller government: flingify a noble!
Or just build a "tax shelter" ... the kind with locked doors.

What start the economy is to build several stacks of coins... Any coins.

Nothing else, as far as I know.

I'm fairly sure the economy is no longer linked to coin production at all, but rather it's linked to the tax collector (or the baron) who shows up when you get 100 dwarves.

Edit: or maybe 80 dwarves. and maybe you need a certain amount of wealth too. but you don't need coins.

I still don't understand. How do dwarves "get" the coins once everything starts up. Do they just go to the stock piles and get as many coins as they want? Do they earn coins based on their work? Can they eat from the food stock piles and get armor and weapons as normal or must they go through the shops after the coins come in? Do nobles just gank your coins at will? Is there any point to making a bunch of coins other than leaving your adventure characters a ton of throwing weapons?

Dwarves get money for doing stuff. They will spend money on rent and random items that they buy from shops. That's why you end up with so many dwarves without rooms sleeping in the barracks.
