Specifying squad weapons
« on: November 22, 2007, 07:20:00 pm »

When I tell my Captain of the Guards to use an axe or a sword, how to a specify what material made axe to use?

I am worried my soldiers are using wooden weapons instead of iron ones, and I want to know how to make sure my Captain of the Guards gets the iron armor instead of the recruits.

Saddly there is no real way of doing this.

But the current work around as follows.

Get Squad to drop weapon.
Station the squad into a room full of the axes or ect of the kind you want
LOCK the door
Then tell them to pick up the weapon you want them to have.

this makes use of stockpiles and doors, tiresome and annoying, but it works or ought to, I haven't had a military as of yet.  :p

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to get rid of any bad/wooden weapons.

yes.. get rid of them. ideal case.
you may want to try the following.

1) designate a dump zone and dump all the inferior stuff.  (after dumped, they acquire forbidden state).  Claim them when merchants come and sell them.

2) Designate an area specially for low quality weapons.  You may want to tag them manually to be forbidden to prevent them from being taken.  Claim them when merchants come and sell it.

3) Seems to be my fav atm.  Melt all the inferior and reforge them again until you get the quality you want.  Gives the forgers something to do instead of lazing around due to lack of metal...

My problem isn't really with weapons.. but rather armours...  too many parts to manage properly sometimes...

I'm intending to build one or more mini-forts for the purpose of training my dwarves with wooden swords, and once they finish, letting them back into the main fort and equipping them with steel or obsidian ones.

Right now there are a few reasons I haven't started yet:
1. I haven't mass-produced steel armor yet. I intend to have all soldiers wearing masterwork steel armor prior to beginning wrestling training.
2. I want them to become legendary wrestlers, armor users, and shield users before undergoing sword training.
3. Nobody wants to put seeds, food, or drinks in the mini-fort stockpiles and just leave them there. I'll have to abuse the dump feature to stock it up.
4. I need to make two or three connected mini-forts, one for wrestling training (or do it in the main fort), and one for swords training, and possibly another one for unhappy dwarves. Right now I have one large mostly-outdoors mini-fort.
5. I only have four soldiers so far, only one of whom is a legendary marksdwarf so far. I want the dwarves to become legendary marksdwarves before undergoing wrestling training. They're also legendary engravers (or miners) before being conscripted.

That sounds like some heavy overkill right there. I prefer blunt weapons, and I find that expert wrestler/shield user with exceptional quality iron plate is good enough to eliminate training fatalities and cut down broken limbs to the point where I only have 1 or 2 bedridden at a time (and then they get better). For that matter, at that point you can throw them up against goblins with their deadly bows and spears and not have unreasonable casualties, if you give them weapons and make sure they're not hopelessly outnumbered.

You can just make separate storage rooms for training-material weapons and combat-material weapons, then lock the doors to the room you don't want your dwarves to take from.

All that training is definitely overkill. And when the gobbos come, they will one shot all of them with an arrow.

What I do is I Expert Wrestler > Legendary Crossbow > Legendary Hammerdwarf

And then I give ALL my dwarves crossbows. When they run out of ammo, they beat things with the bows at a legendary level.

Overwhelming numbers of bolts are the best way to solve any combat.
