meat going rotten
« on: November 22, 2007, 04:13:00 pm »

I'm butchering deer and so on, and it's rotting. How do I make sure that it gets turned into edible food? The kitchen is next door, and set on producing lavish meals. A refuse stockpile is right next to the butcher, where the meat is going rotten.

Where is the food stockpile? Meat will not rot in a food stockpile.

I think it can rot in stockpiles, I have had this problem before and I think I read somewhere recently-like today-that Toady said it was a problem at the moment.  I have gotten into thte habit of cooking my meat becuase I have had it rot before.

Oh please tell me you're just kidding. I just bought nearly 800 meat and 100 fish. I was hoping to run most of my fort off meat for the next few years. If it all rots then I'll have to go back to farming.

In my experience, no type of food ever rots while in a stockpile.  (Possibly if it's outside on freezing maps, it will suffer freezer burn.)

But I believe that the time it spends in the trade depot, or being transported on a mule, counts against it.  So it may actually rot while a dwarf is carrying it from stockpile to table.  Which sucks.

Anyway, cooking it has no downside.  Transform four stacks into one, and potentially free up some barrels.  And I believe that it resets the rot counter.

Purchased meat won't rot - it's fine. I'm specifically talking about recently butchered meat. My butcher is cutting up deer, and then putting the deer chunks in a refuse pile next door, where they promptly rot. I don't know how to prevent this.

My *food* stockpile is full of purchased meat, processed fish, and so on, and it does not rot. I'm just trying to figure out the flow chart for processing hunted animals.

Deer chunks are some of the garbage produced as a result of butchering.  Every animal produces the following when butchered:

1 skull
1 skin
[fat] fat
[size] bones
[size] chunks
[size] meat

...unless expressly specified otherwise in the raw data files.

I can safely say that fish has rotted on my stockpile. My dwarves are moving bullhead bones by dozens into my refuse pile. Not quite sure how stockpiles work though, I can say that the barrel was on the stockpile space but so were a number of other items, so I'm not sure if it counted as being in the stockpile or not.

foods will rot outside
meats will rot if not in a stockpile

foods of edible type will become withered from being walked on

bought foods will not rot but can become withered from walking on it

Okay - so I checked up, and it was deer chunks that were rotting. The meat was processed, and eventually turned into delicious, lavish meals! Good to know that rotting chunks doesn't mean the meat is going to waste! Thanks.

I thought that meat NOT in a Barrel or such rots, while if it is in a barrel it doesn't.

I'm pretty sure that people who are seeing "xfoodx", "XfoodX", and "XXfoodXX" are actually being subject to vermin, not to people trampling the food, but I'm not absolutely certain.

Meat does rot in stockpiles.  It's in the buglist.

However, you can still cook rotten meat/fish to turn it into good food.
