I'm not sure there's much technique to "whack person with small club"

Not entirely sure which school it was.  It was one of those "self defense only" classes.  I'm not entirely sure whether the guy was yanking our chain or not though.  He had us be blindfolded, and try to block other students.
Yeah, that worked out about as well as you can expect blindfolding six-eight year olds and telling others to hit them.

I've actually done some blindfolded weapon fighting, and it's incredibly fun. And I'm good enough (or a great many people are bad enough), that actually winning against a non-blind but inexperienced opponent is actually surprisingly easy. And it's very educational - you begin realizing that simply hearing how your opponent is moving is often enough to know what they are going to do next, and that you can control them with your own movements, in a very predictable way. It's pretty cool.

There can be.

Although best martial art is:
1. Hit painful spot
2. Repeat as nessecary until enemy disabled/unable to pursue
3. Run away

Alternatively:
1. Get half a brick
2. Put in sock
3. Hit with 1/2 brick in sock
4. Run

No, it's typically much better to speak softly and carry a big stick.

Yeah, I mean, I know it can be done.  And it is really cool to watch.
But we're talking six or eight years old.  I know they can't.  (I think.  I've got a really poor memory, if you haven't noticed.)  But that doesn't make it any less fun.  Just a different type of fun.

I have trained in Isshinryu karate for 9 or so years, and my perspective is that there is no best martial art, just best martial artists. You train long enough at just about anything, and you will be effective. Granted, I like my style, but I respect others who choose a different style.

I'd say Krav Maga. It's a "win at all costs" style, specifically designed for actual real-world fighting instead of just exercise, even incorporating stuff that works from other martial arts. It's meant for finishing the fight as quickly as possible, going for vulnerable areas like the eyes, punching the neck, kick to the groin, anything that'll disable the other guy and leave him vulnerable.

Difficult for me to comment in great detail. I've never studied it personally, and I've never sparred with anyone who had more than a casual exposure to it.

However, as I understand it, one of the underlying concepts behind krav maga is that it's intended to get people "functional" in as short a time as possible. This is why it's taught by militaries: they have a limited training time, and other priorities. Soldiers need to learn to shoot, maintain equipment, drive vehicles, whatever. Hand to hand combat is not a priority, but it's something that does need to be covered...so the goal is to teach as much as possible within an extremely limited time frame.

If you only have a few weeks to train, and that's it...krav maga is probably a good choice. If you're looking for a "full" system to train with specifically for the purpose of becoming a fighter, I don't think that's something krav maga is really intended for.

Anyway, again: it comes down to what your goals are.

In terms of preparing to win fights, "buy a gun" is just a better use of your time and money.  Or a taser if you're not into the whole killing people thing, or a switchblade if you want a concealed weapon.  Yes, some of those things are illegal some places.  But there's probably something you can find that's both legal and more dangerous than your bare hands.  Don't get me wrong, experienced martial artists can be dangerous, as I'm sure countless muggers have found out.  But it took them an impractically long time to get to that point if all they were interested in was self defense, and fighters using modern weapons are simply more effective than them.  Martial arts is really about the side benefits: self betterment, cultural significance (in those countries where martial arts has a history) sports fighting, entertainment value, getting to tell people you're a black belt, those sort of things.

Don't get me wrong, experienced martial artists can be dangerous, as I'm sure countless muggers have found out.

Unless we're talking about movies, I'd tentatively place the number of muggers defeated by kung fu well within the countable range.

In that case, Dashing Swordsman is the best martial art.  It combines swordplay and charisma into one combat-proficient character.
