I sort of wish I'd joined in on this earlier in the year. I've got...four or five books partially read right now, a testament to how terrible I am at getting myself to start reading. I enjoy reading, but, you know, the internet is quick to steal all my time.

Besides the books I'm reading right now, I've got a large number more I've been meaning to read, so maybe it'd be worth joining in?

Finished Little Women. My theme now is "books I always though I read when I was a kid, but it turns out that I didn't". I did watch the movie a lot when I was little, and by movie, I mean the 1980 anime adaptation. It's on youtube, and I'm afraid to look at it.

And book 18 goes down. Small Gods, by Terry Pratchett, comes in at 357 pages. I must say that I've heard rather good things about this author, and he certainly came through. I look forwards to reading more of his books.

Small Gods is probably my favorite discworld book, and it's not even part of any of the main series.

Read Gifts, by Ursula LeGuin. I liked it, for what it was, and what it wasn't. I don't think I'll ever read "epic" fantasy again. I want stories with no battles or heroes or destiny, as much as that's possible.

I've been reading The Once and Future King off and on. That scene where Merlyn has turned Wart into a merlin and he is among the hunting birds in their meeting is strangely beautiful, though I can't put my finger on why.

Okay, after some thought I've decided to join in on this challenge. It ought to be good for me.

Anyhow, after some highly advanced numerative calculations, called "counting" by some, I'm currently about halfway through three books, not five. I'm not sure what my chances are at reaching 52 books, but they probably aren't exactly high. I might state some personal goal after I've figured out the general speed which I get through a book.

If you want an appropriate handicap to account for your late joining I would suggest reducing your goal to either 40 or 41 books to account for the weeks you missed.

I have been reading.

Battle Royale is amazing. One of the best books I've ever read; top ten for sure, maybe top five. Not amazing in the "literary art" sense like a lot of classics, but every single bit was good.

Fablehaven was given to me by a friend to read. She has the first five books in the series, so she wanted me to read them to see if they're worth making time for. The books are printed for ages 9-12. I don't want to read the others in the series. The first wasn't very good.

I enjoyed the perks of being a wallflower. There was emotion. It makes me yearn. I read the whole thing in one day - a process I can only remember doing with one other book. I was told it is a "chick book", but I still don't understand.

I have to read Dubliners for tuesday (AP Lit), so I'll be adding that somewhere to my list. Probably not as a full book.

Jeez, I forgot all about this for some months. To my further embarrassment I haven't been doing much reading at all. Gonna need to pick up the pace.

Completion of the first book is...complete?

The Math Gene: How Mathematical Thinking Evolved and Why Numbers Are Like Gossip, by Keith Devlin was an interesting book, despite the fact it wasn't what I was exactly looking for. Explains how the author believes mathematics and language evolved from the same point and various ways in which this could have come about.

I believe I'll go with i2amroy's suggestion and stick with 40 books. Next up I'll finish Titus Groan. I technically started it sometime last year, so I'm not totally sure I can add it to this list.

You might want to try Lakoff's "Where Mathematics Comes From."  I, as a mathematician-in-training, endorse it most heartily.  It's a linguistics/cognitive science perspective on math written with the utmost clarity.

I'll definitely remember to look it up. I actually got Paul Lockharts Measurement in the mail yesterday. After reading his essay that showed up in the mathematics thread awhile back, I ended up looking for more by him as well as grabbing Devlin's book from the library. I've always known that mathematics was important to me and that I'd use it in whatever I did, but now I'm actually thinking about doing math for the sake of doing math. It is certainly a tempting thought.

So yes, thanks for the recommendation. =)
