I'm in. I haven't been reading as much as I should as of late, so maybe this'll motivate me a bit.

Periodicals won't count.
Why not? Most periodical collections are op-ed anyhow, and some have lengthy sections between the actual columns themselves too, so it can be hard to tell the difference between a book with excerpted columns and a collection of periodicals. Most of Marilyn vos Savant's books are like that, I think.

Lengthy fan fiction is okay[.]
Cool, definitely in. Any opinion on lower word limit, or just go with what's comfortable? 40k'd be more than enough to cover my tastes, as I generally don't dip below 60k (doesn't last long enough :-\). I'll throw in for 52 as a lower limit :P

Yeah, 40k should be enough for a lower limit.

I checked periodical collections, seems like they could indeed fit the bill. While we are on this, biographies and chronicles and such also count.

Oh, I'd very much like to do this. Trouble is, in a week I'll be surrounded by books in a language of which I don't speak very much. I'd be fluently reading it, however, by...oh let's say Valentine's Day.

Would it be acceptable to do a 46-book challenge from February 15th to December 31st?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

You guys are nuts.  No way I could read a book a week.   At least not without cutting into my valuable comics & video games time.   :P

That would be interesting, each book would be in that language?

If it's so then I would allow you.

I'm up for the challenge. When I actually get down to reading I usually crank out a novel every few days, so I should be able to do this no prob.

Oh hey, does it count if it's a gigantic book that you've partially read?

To date, I still haven't finished Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, mostly because of the absurdly dry portions between the interesting bits.

When asked what happens when you are then shot in the other eye, he said that you put an eyepatch on that eye. When asked how you'd be able to see, he said that your first eye would have healed by then.

I'd love to do this, but I've been having difficulties with reading. Perhaps this watchpost will help motivate me come the new year, but for now I'm not in.

I'll put myself down to a nice round half order of 26, just because my next year might not be accommodating for much reading at certain junctures.

And for other people who don't have the space or cash to carry physical books, I highly recommend giving Baen's free library a look. It appears to be a bit shorter than it used to be, but free, easy to access, popular, modernish Sci-fi or fantasy might be your style.

Also, Eric Flint's essay on that page is pretty amusing, I think.

Isn't that in like seven 500 page volumes?

You'd have to be crazy to try to read something like that for this, but if I did I'd count each volume as a separate book for sanity's sake. And possibility's.

Ugh I would but I doubt I could read that many with all the school stuff I have. Also lacking in book funds.
