I think that a horror/FPS would be a lot better fit for playing the Imperial Guard. Think about it - most of the major threats in the Warhammer world [Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, Necron, Tyranids] would be incredibly lethal to the IG, and a fight with any of them would quickly turn into a slaughter.

An AAA game would have to include tons of your squad dying around you, blood, chaos, confusion, terror, and possibly some of the more exotic threats [Dark Eldar, anyone?] AND IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL, but noone in the dev world lately seems to know what Horror is, let alone heretical stuff like pacing.

That or just make an Inquisition RPG. Either works.

Guard really doesn't get enough love. Sure, space marines have superhuman strength and endurance, cool power armour and full auto rocket launchers. But the guardsmen face the horrors of the Universe with nothing but a glorified flashlight and resolve. So tell me, who's more badass here?

I think the hardest part would be working in the numers of IG you'd need, unless you wanted to totally break canon.  Without doing a battlefront style rush into a meat grinder, you'd have to somehow account for huge numbers of NPCs on the battlefield, while still making your individual actions seem important.

The trouble is empowering the player to actually feel important.

I guess you could do something on the scale of a game like ARMA, with small squads of men operating with a larger force somewhere near them.  If you picked some of the special units like scouts or Cadians or Catachan or whatever, then they could justifiably operate in small squads.  But you'd never have a situation where you were a lone hero like in the majority of FPS games.

I'm thinking the Inquisition would be better for an FPS.  For guardsmen, maybe a squad-based game with Kasrkins or similarly elite troops.

Why not combine the two, like Republic Commando? An FPS with squad command elements. Personally I'd love to hear the crack of a hellgun up close and personal.

An FPS with squad command elements.

Like ARMA, perhaps?  I wonder if there are mods for this...

I spent 10 minutes on the "Input" controls menu clicking around feeling stupid before trawling the internet for answers. I finally happened on Steam Community posts about the game (since it has no forums), to learn you can't remap controls. Even though it's set up just like a normal PC game. The game is off to a heretical start ><

OMG, they have a brother Zael. LOL.

Heresy #2: Terrible menu overlapping/menus getting stuck on the screen.

Well, why not? That was the name of one of the Marines in the most recent board game iteration.

Oh, I thought it might have been a reference to that web short.

Anyways, the game is pretty solid, although not without its bugs. GUI elements not getting cleared off the menu screens like they should, the occasional order you know you didn't give. For those that aren't big fans of the game or the IP in general, the price tag is pretty steep. For a lover of 40k and Space Hulk, it's a small price to pay. And there looks to be the promise of moar? if it does well I suppose.

Sounds like it needs a bit of polish and a patch to fix a few things.

Still looking forward to playing it this weekend, though.
