Okay, so I'm fairly clueless about space hulk other than its a turn based strategy (which is enough for me).  I just wanted to check to see if its got any microtransactions before I put it on my buy list?

Almost definitely not.  Space Hulk is a board game with a concise ruleset and very tight balance.  Any kind of microtransactions beyond basic cosmetics would be ruinous.

Also, from everything we've seen they've stuck very closely to the source game. So I'd expect DLC in the form of new mission packs and whatnot, but nothing missing from the core game at all.

Is this going to be a linear campaign?

Looking forward to this. I've the latest board game edition and I spent a load of time collecting all the old missions, rules, alternate rules (extra weapons, chapters, races etc), and anything published elsewhere (90 odd missions), but then I ran out of people to play it with. Going to be playing as Deathwing if possible.

Is this going to be a linear campaign?

There's three missions that are your tutorial, that they came up with on their own. It's probably where they will have cut scenes and stuff, set up the story they wrote. Then the rest of the game is the missions from the board game. How they're laid out, end to end on after another, or if they're presented in a branching fashion, who knows. What is known, is that they're based off the board game. So don't get your hopes up of some really involved campaign. It's literally a series of missions with different layouts and objectives. Some you just need to escape, some you need to blow up X, and it looks like there might be an escort mission.

So. They're just putting some cut scenes and a story around a board game.

Aw man, tactical games just have so much more meta-game you can add to them, I'm sad to see them take this route :( I keep thinking of what M&B promised initially, with your own faction and so forth, and that is the kind of meta-game I'd love to see over nice tactical gameplay. Oh well. I'll probably eventually get it, but I get sad at games that have a campaign and then... are over :(

Well, their mandate was to recreate the board game and make it sexy. Not create a new game with the board game as its base. While I agree it'd be cool to see something like what was done in Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising, fans of the board game would flip shit. Space Hulk the board game is rigidly balanced, and anything that impacted gameplay outside of what takes place on the board would skew that balance and send it places it's never gone.

I could easily see them doing a Space Hulk 2.0 if this is successful. But notice how Bloodbowl hasn't really gone outside the scope of the table top rules either? There's a reason for that. GWS fans are fucking crazy about the IP. If you tell them it's supposed to be like [insert table top game here], they will hold you to that.

This is cool and all, and I'll probably play the shit out of it. But god dammit, where is my imperial guard video game. All I want is ONE game where you play as a guardsman, ONE.

Cyanide did some very weird things that go against the tabletop rules of BB. But then again, they have gotten severe flak for it as well so I guess you're right :p

The thing is that Blood Bowl (as a boardgame) already has a meta campaign type thing which works really well, and that's implemented in Cyanide's games as well as FUMBBL. There's a huge meta-management game. It's necessarily linear, there's just different cups you can go for, and leagues and stuff. That's not quite the case with Space Hulk. But hey, I haven't really played any Space Hulk game except for FF's Space Angel, which isn't quite the same.

Oh well:)

What, like a FPS?  There aren't many reasons to be a single heroic guardsman, you either have to be a company commander or you have to be one of a thousand men.

That said, an imperial guard game would lend its self well to a StarWars Battlefront type game where you constantly die and re-spawn and try to control a battlefield.

For other scales. you could play guards in Final Liberation, but that was more like the Epic scale stuff.

Also could control guards in Rites of War.

sort of surprised there aren't more mods for doom/quake/unreal/insert-engine-of-choice-here that are in the 40K universe.  But I guess GW is probably heavy handed with cease-and-desist orders any time those crop up.

I might get shot for saying this, but a straight AAA big budget FPS game where you play a guardsmen would be something I'd enjoy. I feel like playing Space Marines, you get a lot of cludgy dialog where nothing unexpected is said or done, because they're Space Marines and they're popped out of a mold for the most part. I think it kind of colors the way the rest of the setting gets handled.

Playing an IG, I dunno, I think it would give the 40k universe a lot more punch because you're not a superhuman Space Knight who doesn't really have feelings other than rage. You're not spouting off constantly about duty and your lack of fear, you're terrified but resolute. I think it'd make the setting way more believable, than most games with Space Marines, which tend to come off almost cartoony these days with how hammy it gets.

It'd also be an excuse to indulge in the kind of large engagements (like SW Battlefront, yeah) that no 40k game has really tried yet. You can't talk about thousands of Space Marines fighting without it being something GWS actually has a say in. You can talk about Imperial Guard fighting and dying in the millions, and GWS won't bat an eye.
