Marksdwarfs and archery ranges
« on: December 10, 2012, 12:02:57 pm »

So I have come to a conclusion that marksdwarfs will not train unless the archery target is above ground. Never have I had it work underground. I am wondering if it's just how I'm setting it up, which I have done in the past. Even then I have had marks dwarfs who should of trained with the outside archery target and has decided that looking at an engraving of cheese is much more appealing then shooting an object.

Ps. Fuuuuu auto correct

I'm not having any troubles with archery ranges underground, or with marksdwarf squads training in general.  I follow this checklist generally:

  • Sufficient crossbows to arm squad on hand
  • Sufficient quivers to arm squad on hand
  • Multiple archery ranges constructed1
  • Squad defined in military screen2
  • Marksdwarf squad assigned to a barracks -  used for non-archery training and drills
  • Marksdwarf squad assigned to multiple archery targets

1 - Constructed as separate 1x5 rooms. (I don't worry about recovering bolts, just make more!)  Construct the target at one end.  Remember to define it firing in the proper direction or it will not work correctly.  Define each target separately.

2 - Squad equipment specifically assigned the crossbow under "W".  Ammo assigned under "f" and verified to have a supply of the proper bolts on hand.  Scheduled for months with training (multiple training for two orders) and months with no standing order.  Squad can be left inactive in the alert section, but I usually activate them.

And periodically after being set up I verify that the squad is properly equipped (has crossbows and quivers) and has bolts (you would be surprised how quickly a few marksdwarves can shoot off a thousand bolts in practice.)

I have also noticed delays while things start up, but usually within a month one or the other squad starts visiting the range.  Another factor is a that Dabbling marksdwarves spend more time with combat drills initially it seems.

Hmm interesting. It could be the quivers I am lacking. But I've generally have followed barracks, a archery range and the supply of bolts etc, thanks, had to ask to see if there was a way to get them to work besides baptism by fire.

Plus other people can now view this for a short period of time and see what is going wrong!

It could be a scheduling problem.  Archery practice is a low priority task, so other labors will interfere.  "Training" is a different task than archery practice, so it will interfere as well.

Along with the others here, I found the only way to get my marksdwarves to train is to be in their squad, have multiple targets, make sure Hunting is turned off on all the marksdwarves, and finally make sure their squad is NOT set to active/training and turn off almost all their other labors.  I found if they are set to active they get the message "Going to Archery practice" but actually stay still but if they are not active they will.

Also, surround the target lanes with ditches and wall on the sides and back, so missed bolts will strike the wall, fall down, and be recovered.

The size of the archery target range is not important. I typically just use the default size. Check their inventory -- make sure they have a crossbow, a quiver, and bolts in their quiver. Also, make sure they are not stuck in a 'picking up equipment' loop. And, in the bolt assignment screen, select the bolts, and check that some are assigned and not marked as forbidden.
