Forever running out of thread :(
« on: December 10, 2012, 03:56:25 am »

Where on earth does all my thread go.

I keep making cloth and then making some clothes from it; but while others say they have a working clothing industry (which you kind of need now) I always find I have no spare thread/cloth.

Need some ideas for keeping the stuff flowing so I can just leave the clothing orders on repeat! Help! D:

Leave the Process Plants job on repeat.

Also, it may all be getting stored in the hospital, in which case it won't be available for weaving.

Which plants are best for this then? Pig tails?

Also, if its in the hospital, is there any limit to it?

I do seem to get some, "sometimes" however its never enough to leave the job on repeat :/

Hospital jobs will stop eventually. Check your hospital zone to see just how many units of thread it's hoarding.

Rope reeds are the most consistent source of clothing, as you can grow those all year round. Pig tails are a summer / autumn crop. Leather can be bought in vast quantities from the dwarven caravan, though if you have trouble getting the caravan in safely you'll need a backup. Goblin clothing fits dwarves, so you can use that as well.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Pig tail or rope reed(aboveground) are thread source plants.

hospital is limited only by amount of coffers you build there. Hospital options are broken.

And I usually set 2 farmer workshops on repeat.

Is it weird that the first thing I thought of was "How do you run out of forum?"?

If it's just thread, it could be all getting auto-loomed. Silly to say, but I forget stuff like that a lot. Also use stockpiles in you hospitals. They're a lot more efficient.

You need a lot of farms for thread.

Using 2x2 plots, I'd end up using 7-8 above ground for other plants, and 4 below ground for the same, with about 8-9 for each thread producer.  With at least five farmers and two threshers.

And I'd still have to keep restarting the process plants orders in the workshops.

I eventually modded a hivable spider that leaves behind silk just to avoid all that.

Novice growers will average 1 plant (pig tail or rope reed) harvested per seed planted. Legendary growers with potash fertilizer average 5 plants per seed. These plants are in a "stack" so it's 1 job for your thresher whether it's 1 plant/1 thread or 5 plants/5 threads. So if you are focused in your farming practices, the thread output of your farmers workshops increases up to 500% and your looms will be in constant supply.

Is it weird that the first thing I thought of was "How do you run out of forum?"?
On that day not a thing shall be spoken for it has already been said. The upper forums long since overrun, the lower forums long since fossilized beneath entire layers of spam.
And we shall know a Forum lived and died here.

Easy solution to the hospital problem. Dual zone hospital. While it's handy to have a hospital, you don't necessarily need that cloth and thread all the time. Build the hospital with two beds, one table and one traction bench, then duplicate it. Put a single coffer in the middle of either one. Then designate two zones. One of these is a hospital, the other is undesignated. When you have an injury serious enough to require thread/bandages/etc, then you disable the hospital without the supplies and enable the one with. They should move the wounded dwarf to the other hospital using recover wounded.

I haven't tried it yet, since I don't have injuries that serious at the moment, but if it doesn't work, then just delete and redesigate a zone to include a coffer when you need thread or other items. They'll be brought, and used and when you remove the zone, they'll be stockpiled again. If they survive to needing treatment the hauling time is negligible. Minecart quantum dumping along the side of the zone can reduce this even further. Just ensure it's within any doctors burrows.

So just build one bag and one coffer?

1. Lots of animals, like horses or yaks for example, produce hair which can only be made into thread, not cloth. If all your other thread is woven into cloth, this will be used in healthcare.

2. Don't build containers in the hospital, you don't need them. The dwarfs will fetch everything they need from it's respective stockpile anyway.
As alternative you can also build containers and then set what you want to be stored there with "H" when setting up the hospital zone. I usually store only soap bars in the hospital for example.

Ah yes I see now.

My hospital seems to have massively more thread/cloth in its stores than it needs (I lowered the amount to the minimum above 0).

Will other dwarfs use the materials within the hospital normally, for making clothing ?

No, they won't. That is why I suggest not storing thread and cloth there.
Later in the game your problem could be even worse: adamantine strands count as thread too, so your dwarfs might happily carry your most rare and valuable material to the hospital when you just wanted to use it.
