I'm here to revive the thread with news.

A new game has been announced, New Etrian Odyssey: Millenium Maiden!

The gist is it's a remake of the first EO game, this time with a bit more focus on plot and customization. You have five dudes, they all have names and plot associated with them as a typical JRPG party would, and you can switch classes on them. There's also a Classic Mode, which will work like EO1. Also expect balance fixes because Atlus wants you and your little band of incredibly lethal children dead. On top of all this, you'll also be able to pick between live orchestral performed music (wow, is that a first? I'm actually not sure. Maybe not.) and FM audio, IE synthesized tracks. On top of this, there's a new difficulty system, easy, normal, hard, presumably similar to EO4's system (IE, easy gets a permanent warp wire, probably weaker enemies), and it also uses the 3DS's 3D capabilities, IE 3D enemies.

But wait, there's more! You can find stones called "grimoire" that contain skills from other classes that you can graft onto your currently existing characters. So a protector with double attack, for instance. They occur randomly after battles.

A release date for the US hasn't been announced, and in fact it's just being announced in japan, but Atlus are cool dudes about these things so expect it at some point!
That like the perfect game ever.... :'( it so beautiful

I heard about this. Having just finished EO1 this year, I say: meh. :P
I absolutely loved how minimalist the plot was and the fact that you had to make your own set of characters. I was way too attached to my roving band of weirdos by the end. Also, for some reason I can't imagine the plot being as effective if it's more fleshed out, since a lot of what made the latter parts of the game so creepy/engrossing for me was the mystery and speculation combined with the detached way it was presented.
</changeditnowitsucks>

That said, I will 100% forgive this game for existing if it gives me live orchestral versions of all the EO1 music.

Story mode is entirely optional so you can still go with your roving band of idiots.

It doesn't matter if you try to pay attention to the new plot or not, Atlus is still going to try harder than most other companies to kill your party ;)

I'd heard about this.  I was quite pleased when they announced classic mode would still exist, but I may still try the plot mode just to see the differences since I played through EO1 after picking it up with the recent reprint.

They'll probably rebalance the classes, too, particularly some of the more notorious skills that killed the game difficulty.  The best part is that if this goes well, they'll probably do EO2 as well.  Muckdiles and Ur-Child, joy. :D

Maybe that means Hexers will be useful now. Because, you know, Exhaust is about on the level of Defender, except that it doesn't take up precious buff slots. They're already #1 in my heart, with Ronin being the runner-up. Man, why did I have to like the two worst classes in the game the most? :P

...bye bye, Relax.

Now I really need a 3ds..

It's always a possibility, atlus has been liking their remakes lately. I suppose soul hackers isn't a remake in the traditional sense but nontheless. Also see Persona series in general.

FYI:
Etrian 4 is on sale for 30$ on the eshop.  I just picked it up and thus far I'm liking it better than 3 (albeit this time around I took a tanker and this seems to vastly help).

Question: Is there some way to boost my nightseeker's ability to inflict status effects?  They almost never seem to work and thus the class is seeming a little anemic.

Also is it worth investing points in the fortress + def skill or the landskersnet's +attack skill?

Right now I'm running Land/Fort/Row swapping nightseeker  and then medic/sniper.  I've discovered that having the land use vanguard and improved link while the sniper uses spotter and lock on, leads to horrific levels of damage with followup link/Squall volley spam.  So really my only problem here is getting the nightstalker to inflict some status effects (the Fortress and Medic do the usual thing).

I'm afraid I'm not terribly well versed in EO4, but I'll bump this for you!

I believe the only thing you can do to increase it yourself is to put more points in the skill. Later you could subclass the Nightseeker into an Arcanist for the Master level skill "Ailment Mastery" which increases odds of binds and ailments. Other than that, you could give the NS equipment with Luck stacked on.

On passives, no, I don't think it's worth it. HP and TP up are good though. I guess it depends, I'm no expert either.

And on the link thing, yeah, link landsknecht are great. Takes setup time and plenty of TP but all the hits are very entertaining.

So far the luck equips have helped.  I put a + luck belt on the Nightseeker and she managed to put paralyze on the hollow queen.  Based on using the free arcanist, I really like their abilities and may swap one in once I can cross class it with medic (or cross class my medic) as I want the patch up skill.

Notably once something did get paralyzed or poisoned the Nightseeker could hit for 400+ a round with shadowbite.  I'm pretty sure using Arcanist abilities would help a lot with that.

(Necro time)

Finally got my 3Ds on the 4th and I got EO4 Today and the one that comes out in October all payed for.
I'm already lvl 17 and in the 2nd area the game has not been very hard so far I had way more problem in SMT4 I hope it get harder then this....

I made a Landsknecht, Fortress, Nightseeker,Runemaster,Medic team nothing special I'm building the NS like I built my Ninja/Shogan in 3, pure death if only the NS had the One Hit Kill move like the Ninja.

My only subs I'm decided on is RM/Arcanist and maybe NS/Bushi that might be fun.

It doesn't really get harder, sadly.

Other than having to grind a bit to retool for the bosses, I've pretty much been sailing through everything. (I'm near the beginning of the last storyline stratum, assuming there's a brutal postgame one like in the others.)
