It doesn't really get harder, sadly.

Other than having to grind a bit to retool for the bosses, I've pretty much been sailing through everything. (I'm near the beginning of the last storyline stratum, assuming there's a brutal postgame one like in the others.)
That kinda makes me sad...

Also, the stuff you can make from conditional drops isn't nearly as cool. Frankly, I find EO4 to be the least interesting of the bunch on pretty much all levels.

(Side note, I'd also have to downvote Unchained Blades, another first-person dungeon crawl RPG, on the grounds that it's ridiculously grindy with frustrating gameplay gates.)

I hope the remake of EO1 will be better or at least more of a challenge.

......are we talking about the same game?! I mean, I've lost at least 6 times EACH to the Hollow Queen, as well as to the Baboon King. As well as random party wipes from enemies that seemed harmless, but got a few lucky hits and left me crippled

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

The only thing that killed me so far is the one time I ran into a FoE on the overworld before I was ready the Bunny/Kangaroo thing I can just Kill them now but I've not gone into the 2nd Overworld Dungeon much yet I went back to finish my run in SMT4.
I can just Auto most random battles down.

I originally got my hands on one of the DS games by pure chance here in Australia as it seems that we can never grt the good games up this end of the coast. Unless I want to travel over 3hrs or more to the cities to check their game stores T-T

BUT the 3ds one is coming out and got that thing preordered instantly so I do not mIss it...

Well... having survived EO1-3, I was moving at a very deliberate, measured pace through EO4. The bosses gave me a bit of trouble since they tended to have non-standard mechanics so I had to grind up a bit to take them, which meant I was overpowered for the next stratum, which kind of carried on, until the next boss, repeat.

What your team set up?

I ran:
Landsknecht/Fortress/Dancer
Arcanist/Medic
before switching to, in the 3rd stratum,
Landsknecht/Fortress
Arcanist/Medic/Sniper.

Medic is subclass Arcanist for the chance of free spells, Fortress took Landsknecht for some of the nice offensive/defensive passives, and the rest took Nightseeker for Follow Trace and Speed Boost.

I'm probably going to have to do some heavy retooling later on though, since I'm built for the fortress to take everything, medic to constantly heal, and the rest to deal pure straight-up damage.

Stopped playing at the start of the 5th stratum, but back then personally I used (if you don't know the a

Landsknecht/Runemaster, Nightseeker/Arcanist, Fortress/Dancer
Sniper (or was it survivalist)/Bushi, Arcanist/Medic

L/R was for links and more TP for link spam, N/A for status and throws, F/D for evasion as well as Sword Hammer Dance, S/B for burst damage with Blood Surge or whatever, and A/M for healing and binds. This isn't super-ideal as I don't have more dancers for that song that makes you attack after another member on your row attacks (for super maximum link spam) or a runemaster with Glacier (random hits = link spam).
But it's worked well enough so far, I haven't had too much trouble with any bosses except the 4th stratum boss as well as knowing the movement patterns of the 3rd stratum boss though I could still get wiped on auto-battle (or if I just wasn't thinking) in the 4th/5th strata, not to mention the mechs. I think. It's been a while.

Been playing the EO1:U demo in Story (classic mode isn't available) and it's got a LOT of changes from the original.

New areas (at least one subarea), new classes/skills (Gunner has a pretty awesome low-level skill: Heals the front line every time she defends. 20HP heal with a 3SP investment when I only have 60GP? Ooo.), a more robust automap (sorry, I've already mapped this entire place once-- I don't mind being lazy), the grimoire stone system where you can use skills from other sources, rebuilt skill trees, and, my memory may be off slightly, but effectively bonus skill points. On an alchemist, for example, putting one point into the basic alchemy skill gives you one free point in each of fire/ice/lightning. Also, alchemists have entirely lost the toxin branch entirely.

There's a lot of QoL changes too, like vastly faster combat, movement in the dungeon, ability to teleport directly to the stairs if you've mapped that floor adequately, new buffs available in town (first one that gets unlocked allows for HP regen after every round), hidden passages being visible so you're not constantly strafing (like in EO4, how they're usually flowers visible), etc.

The layout of the second floor is entirely different too-- the Ragelope is still introduced, but it's bigger and has a new FoE with an unprecedented movement pattern (not that it's complex, but it IS new, as far as I can recall).

Unfortunately, Lolimedic is unavailable in Story Mode. However, Caduceus is still there, so the frontline medic is still sheer awesome. ^_^

The bonus skill points seem to only apply to specific trees, as far as I can tell.
