Atom Smasher Drain
« on: December 09, 2012, 05:04:06 pm »

The other day I asked about draining with a glitch from carving fortifications in the map edges. It works as I was told, but I am thinking about the future here, when this glitch is possibly fixed.

Would it be possible to make an atom smasher drain water? Could they even be built and automated (not sure if water can trigger pressure plates) so that water falling into a room is smashed into non-existence, effectively draining unneeded liquid, every few seconds?

It should be possible.

As for map edge water draining: even if Toady decides to make it impossible by making us unable to carve fortifications near the map edge it should still be possible just to pump the water on ground and letting it flow out of the map. I don't think that Toady will ever remove map edge's ability to drain water since that would screw up rivers, brooks, oceans and all that stuff.

It is also pretty easy to use aquifers for draining water. That method should be much more convinient than using atomsmashing.

Yes on both counts; just have a drawbridge linked to a pressure plate next to it that is activated by whatever water level you want. When the drawbridge lowers, it'll smash all of the water below it.

If you were going this way you would want to have the pressure plate toggle on a repeater, not just be connected straight to the drawbridge. Elsewise you could potentially fill the room up and then fill it up again before the pressure plate could untoggle, thus resulting in a bridge that would no longer move as water pours into the room.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
