weapons that strike at distance, penalties and wrestling weapons
« on: December 09, 2012, 01:41:56 pm »

Spears, pikes, wips, etc. The idea is for them to be able to strike 2 tiles away, for some maybe even 3. Weapons would also get a penalty when used outside their optimal range.

Whips could also get a bonus in wrestling.

Other wrestling weapons could be implemented

The weapons in this game could use a lot of expansion and rebalancing.
+1 to this idea. I want to strangle someone with a whip!

Nunchaku, IIRC.

Really, and weapon with a long handle or hilt.

Actually spears and pikes could have a great advantage in the game without allowing them to attack from a distance

Simply allow them to attack first and allow them to remove penelties from attacking larger enemies (such as enemies ontop of horses)

Mind you either way they need some sort of advantage.

DF isn't turn-based...well, it is, but not in a way that spears letting you attack "first" would help. Basically, there are a number of "steps," and creatures get to act in about 10% of them. Two combatants having the same "turns" isn't impossible, but it doesn't happen a lot.

Distance would be significantly better.

Yes but lets say both characters have their attack ready. Thus they are ready to attack as quickly as they can swing the weapon and all they have to do is move into distance.

Thus one way to do it is to give the enemy weapon a speed penelty to represent the minut distances they have to cross to strike until they close the distance.

In otherwords the Spear gets the first attack.

A tile is supposedly 2x2 meters at the base, so you'd need a very long weapon to reasonably strike two tiles away.  A whip is about the only weapon that sounds like it would work for that.  A halberd or spear might be long enough to do that, but should have some sort of skill penalties to use either in adjacent squares or at long range depending on what it is, since it would need to be close to 3 meters long at least to be realistic.

Two person spears might would work for that, but would be a whole new can of worms...

Some Pikes can do it Telgin but they would be around the only weapon that could reasonably get multi-tile transition.

Another way to do it with what I reference to is that a Spear can get a "Attack move" so to speak where it gets to swing during the tile transition.

With the upcoming changes to combat, attacks will no longer execute instantly.  If I'm reading the devlogs from a few months back correctly, time spent on attacks is split between steps before the attack hits, and steps afterwards (as opposed to attacking instantly and then sitting still for several steps, which is what we have now).  So when the next update comes out, you could mod shorter weapons to have most of their attack steps before that attack executes, and longer weapons to have most of their steps afterwards.  This would represent the time spent stepping up to an opponent so you can hit them with your shorter weapon, and would also make using longer weapons feel different than using shorter ones.

Pikes could be up to 25 feet (7.5 meters), but that's as long as they get. So, a nice, long pike could attack a few tiles away. Well, those super-long pikes might be a little out of period for the 1400s now that I think about it. Anyway, halberds (poleaxe) were relatively short polearms and would be more like 6 feet (2 meters) long. I really thing that bills and glaives should be put into the game as well. Pole hammers are pretty cool things too.

Remember also that Dragons would have incredibly far necks. I really don't want the game devolving into super long range combat.

Pikes the really long pikes are the only thing that to me represent something that reasonably gets more then one tile distance attack.

I thod tiles were of an abstract distance. Maybe two tile spear strikes seem to much in relation to whatever science has been done on tile size, but think of it gameplaywise, the avantaje of spears and specially pikes is that you can attack from a distance in wich your oponent cant (unles he has a similar weapon). In the same vein very large weapons are somewhat akward to use in short distance.

I think it would not be to much to sacrifice realistic tile distance (wich is not really specified in game) in order to get more realistic combat.

Whats wrong with dragons or some whips attacking 3 tiles away? It would give me better immersion, not otherwise.

I thod tiles were of an abstract distance.

They used to be.  After Toady added minecarts he had to nail down a lot of physics and one of the decisions he ended up making was that tiles are 2x2x3 (lxwxh) in meters.  That's probably still pretty abstract for many things though.
