This is weird... Why is everyone using Black Magicians?

This is weird... Why is everyone using Black Magicians?
If I am looking at their stats correctly, it's because they're devastating when played, and if you have at least one Dark Magician Girl in your deck as well, then she becomes a gamebreaker (already comes with nasty stats, and they get worse the more Dark Magicians are in the graveyard (+300 ATK each DM, meaning you'll get obliterated by that girl if you nuked a bunch of Dark Magicians on the field)), especially if you're up against another player that plays Dark Magicians as well, or are teamed up with another Dark player, or especially play a full-Dark tag-team game.

A Dark deck vs. another Dark deck, and someone plays a DMG after several DMs were already played (+300ATK * (# of DMs graveyarded, regardless of who played them (player or opponent, and their teammates))) = a near-guaranteed win for whoever has her played. With that in mind, she can obliterate gods in a jiffy, provided enough DMs were played/killed/sacrificed.

After watching a few eipsodes of the show, and watched her be used in a few other episodes, holy crap. Besides being fanservice material, no wonder she's also a valued card, alongside the DMs as well. They are crazy-powerful when played correctly.

Everyone used to play dragons. Now everyone is playing winged beasts.

Magicians are a classic. You can't argue with that.
And just fun to play with.

I tend not to use Dark Magicians in my deck even when I am running a magician deck.

I am just surprised to see their popularity given some of their weaknesses.

Then again the best deck I ever made isn't all that great (It is a dark deck that uses Mimics to try to get Crush on the field)

Dark Magicians are kindof outdated really.  Like almost every monster that requires you to sacrifice other monsters without giving you anything in return.

I think the game is still dominated by a few specific decks but at least that deck that almost always won in one turn has stopped working.

Magic the Gathering diminshes power creep significantly by keeping rather extensive Ban Lists based on editions (for example 4 editions and 8 editions ago). So even if the "You can use any card" decks can actually win in turn 0 consistantly, there is still 2 or 3 other formats that can keep the game running rather consistantly. Because of this the power of individual cards can go up and down as there is no pressure to outdo the packs from years ago (In fact the strongest card pack is from a edition that took place years ago)

Yu-Gi-Oh however doesn't do that and has been struggling with unbanning and banning but tries to make sure that cards from the very start of the game are compatible with ones from the end.

What happened to Yu-Gi-Oh however is that they have been consistantly trying to make cards more and more powerful... the game has become somewhat overpowered to the point where if you are NOT using the latest and greatest cards, chances are you are not going to get close to winning. Since the game has gotten to the point where you can get out god cards turn 1.

It is why when Paradox in the Yu-Gi-Oh movie said that in the future... Card games destroyed the world. I believed it.

My themes for Magic tend to be themed around a use (My delicious Proliferation deck... before they nerfed proliferation... and not because it was overpowered but because keeping track of +1/+1 counters AND -1/-1 counters was getting complicated. In otherwords they nerfed my deck for reasons other then balance... It hurt)

My themes for Yu-Gi-Oh tend to be around cards or types.
