Surprised this hasn't yet been mentioned.

Teleglitch is a top-down, low graphics shooter with roguelike elements. Random level generation, enemy and resource placement.

The gist is you're the last surviving researcher on a planet run by a large military research corporation. Fields of study include: weapons research, tissue reanimation, mutagenic experiments and long-range teleportation.

And of course everything went horribly wrong.

There's a limited amount of crafting in the game, allowing you to modify weapons or create new ones, in addition to very useful equipment and upgrades.

The game can be very difficult at times, both due to the RNG and the limited amount of ammo available. You have to tread carefully and make every shot count if you can. There are only 9 levels, but they get progressively longer and more dangerous the deeper you go, until each level can take about 30 minutes to complete. You can only restart on a select number of levels AFTER you've beaten them. On my 3rd try I made it level 6/9, so it's not the hardest game in the world but it definitely puts up a good challenge. Especially when you start running into some of the end-game bosses.

Atmospherically it's pretty cool, there's plenty of flavor text to find and read, and they put some decent effort into sound effects. There's no music but to me that only adds to the sense of isolation.

There's a demo available, and while the $13 price tag may be a little steep for a game like this, I think it's worth the money. It's a little lighter on content than other classic roguelikes, but it's just as engrossing.

Tips:

-Use your knife early on to conserve as much ammo as possible, life withstanding.
-Try to be as accurate as possible, because again, limited ammo and panic fire can really drain your reserves quickly.
-Gadgets are the key to your long-term survival.
-Detector. Get one or die.
-Take your time and go slowly. Advancing too fast can see you end up with a ton of mutants and zombies on your tail.
-Be observant. Secrets aren't hard to find but they're easy to overlook, and they usually contain a lot of stuff you'll want to get your hands on.

Just to pluck this thread back from a few months of obscurity...

Yes!

It's everything nenjin said, low-fi, stylish, atmospheric. The combat is very Hotline Miami (but less one-shot-kill), and it brings in influences from Doom and System Shock, and still very roguelikey.

£8 seems about right after playing through last night... Maybe still a little steep, but play the demo first, it might just float your boat enough to justify the pricetag, like it did me.

e; I should add - by "playing through" I meant playing last night - not completing the game. I'm not that good :P

When this first came out and I saw videos of it I wasn't super interested in it even though I knew I should have been. But I think you actually have to play the game to really get into it. It's a really awesome game that just looks pretty ugly in my opinion but it's not until you actually play then the art style seems to fit the gameplay perfectly. If that made any sense  :P

Yeah, I definitely agree on playing it being different than watching it. I'd seen the game around but not until someone had purchased it already and I got to try it did it really grab me. From the video it looks busy and fast-paced and really indistinct. Combat IS fast paced, but what the video doesn't show is you, creeping through a silent facility with the sound of the wind, computers bleeping and blooping quietly, giant machines hammering away loud as shit...it's a way more tense game than the trailer leaves you the impression with. Visually I think it presents better in person than the video shows, too.

necro'd because i just discovered the game through paradox announcing they'll publish an extended "teleglitch: die more edition" in november.

tried the demo and it's really fun, surprised it's not getting more love here, i'd thought it's exactly the kind of game bay 12 would like.

think half-life meet dungeon crawl.

Indeed. I've got the full game and it's quite good, yet it's not seem to have taken with people here.

Hey maybe I'm just dumb, but I can't seem to locate the demo on their website, just a video, some screenies and a big "COMING SOON" button that doesn't seem to do anything.

I liked it but its a top down shooter basically. I think im adicted to random generation and now static levels and enemies dont do it anymore for me :P

Considering this game has procedurally generated levels and enemy placement.....wha?

Looks like you can buy it on Desura. Not sure where the demo got off to. It reads like the Die More Edition is going to be on Steam when it comes out.

I dont know if they realeased a final version or something, but the one i played was not procedural at all, you could die>restart and know the level layout. I know its maybe a lot to ask but play the 1st level 2 times and post a screen of the level map if posible.

Bump because I'm finally playing this awesome game.  It has its flaws (frontloaded difficulty, weak procedural elements), but it is terrifying and rewarding.

Here's the demo if anyone else is looking.

Huh. Sounds from the OP like Half Life: The Roguelike.
So I'm getting it, of course.
