I must make a note to buy some cats from traders at the next opportunity and see if I can chain up a breeding pair someplace clean. Having kittens wandering the hallways will be a good way of identifying patches of paralytic poison that still need to be taken care of.

Hiya, I'll start my turn tomorrow or the next day.  It's been a while since I signed up for this, so I have to re-read the thread and try to remember what's going on.

The Journal of "Joe" Cattennelas, "Renaissance Man" and interim overseer of MirroredFreezes:

I bought a mug from a human caravan that was etched with the slogan "Come to Mirroredfreezes, we have great mugs!"  So I did.

Well, nothing on that mug prepared me for what I would find here.  First thing was the cold.  As I trekked across the tundra I decided that it had been a mistake to choose the cave spider silk cloak instead of sturdy wool.  And then as I crested the last hill I beheld the horror: a field strewn with blood, and two massive heaps of bodies and skeletons, one of goblins and trolls, the other containing the bodies of legendary dwarves by the dozen.

I found a mayor, Glloyd Sackfreckle, who badly wounded had saved the fort at its most desperate point.  Of me and the fellow migrants he only asked that he be allowed to rest... and perhaps that a couple of armor racks and coffers be installed in his Decent Quarters.  My traveling companions (all mug enthusiasts like me) chose me to be the overseer who would see to these things.

We are a total of twelve dwarves, some badly wounded, and the task before us is great.  But there are reasons for hope.  First, I know that another group of travelers will be coming soon.  Second, we have plenty of supplies of all kinds.  Third, we have dozens of caged goblins who we can use in training up a new military -- also plenty of iron and coal to forge their armor.

My goals for the coming year are to bury the dead, to prepare a new military force to defend Mirroredfreezes, and, if suitable labor can be found, to bring magma up from the earth to warm the bodies and souls of our brave outpost.

Oh, fuck yes. Let's get this fort going. Nice first post! Good luck! Seriously. You'll need it.

OOC: First thing I'm actually going to do is make sure this fort can be hermetically sealed, so I can "turtle up" once I have enough migrants.  It looks pretty good except for some staircases on the "roof" that would allow flyers to enter the fort.  If we can at least keep the goblins and other monsters out, it should just be a matter of time and labor to get things going again.

Yep, that's the big thing. I tried getting all the cage traps refilled as well, but I think there's still a few that need cages. Also the trap wall in the surface fort is a bit spotty. But there's not much I could do about that.

23rd Slate:  The first two months are almost over.  Progress has been slow with only twelve of us, but we have accomplished some preliminary goals: (a) built a new interior gate so the fort can be completely sealed if necessary, (b) almost completed the prisoner-pitting-military-training structure, (c) installed necessary furniture in the mayor's room.  We are making a desk and chair so the vampire can be a bookkeeper.  More bodies have been taken to the corpse stockpile, and many coffins and slabs have been made in anticipation of burying them.

Finally, today, twenty-two migrants have arrived, huzzah!
Hmm... my named dwarf has died, it is unclear how.  His corpse is sitting on top of a rum barrel.

The initial eleven includes:
Glloyd, mayor
Mebzuth K and Tosid L, miners
Ineth G, carpenter
Catten E, planter
Ingish D, mason
Avuz L, stonecrafter (wounded)
Atir S, animal trainer
Tobul A, furnace operator
Kol A, hammerdwarf
Dobar R, vampire bookkeeper.

Nobody is named except Glloyd, so please let me know if anyone needs dwarfing.  I will also re-dwarf myself.  There are 22 migrants of all sorts of professions so I can give you one of those as well.

im pretty sure that you drank yourself to death (and that is VERY difficult to do as a dwarf)

The byzantine architecture of this place must have driven me to drink like that!
Seriously I don't know what you guys were thinking with some of the layouts here.  If time permits I may add my own mad designs into the mix...

Well. I WOULD have done that if SOMEBODY had labeled the lever. I kept pulling the one that operated the no-longer-existant arena cages in the no-longer-useful-because-we-can-make-goblin-drop-soup arena. :(

Ah well. C'est la Dwarf Fortress.

You know, when i started, i designed a perfectly ergonomically designed fort, with easy to follow areas.

Oh well, this is the side effect of the community, increased chaos in the designs

There's a labeled lever now, that's not the problem.  The problem is (a) staircases on the roof, and (b) the fort is so complex I can't be sure there aren't other "leaks" elsewhere.  I built an internal gate that I'm pretty sure will protect us totally... and I labeled and color-coded it too (the gate and lever are quartzite-white).

Yeah. It took me forever to figure it out. It was a feat simply to find our way to the basement. Luckily, the well is sealed off, so you won't have to worry about flooding at the moment...

Also I noticed nobody has breached the caverns yet.  I thought I read about a visit to the caverns some page back.  Must have been one of those "alternate universe" playthroughs.  Does anybody mind my using the "reveal" hack to make clean entrances into the caverns?  (I don't propose to use it to illicitly locate minerals, gems, or anything like that.  I just hate having staircases dangling into the air and that sort of thing.)
