Excerpt from "Chief Cook" Overseer Rendell's Journal: Third Entry

1st of Granite
My first acts as Overseer were to expand and centralize our warehouses and crafting sectors, so Ive ordered Artimaus and Feylers our mining team to dig out some new rooms. Reports from the previous Overseer bp920091 warned of those single minded thieving Kobold's raiding our equipment stocks, so Ive ordered a new entry way that can be easily guarded, also the  Cistern for our water supply with be lowered further so there can be well access in the dining-hall.

Ive also lowered the amount of ordered smoothing of stone in the dining/living quarters that the idle workers were doing, since much hauling and masonry work is to be required for the current constructions.

14th of Granite

Our resident Hunter Javier began complaining that there were no bolts for his crossbow, although there seems to be plenty of bone ones in our ammo storage.

However he still managed to take down a Muskox and bring it in for butchering, I assume by bashing it repeatedly over the head with his -hose bone crossbow-.

20th of Granite

For the construction of the well and cistern we need metal for the pump screw, and as we have limited room available the forge and smelter has been placed in the future dining hall until we can a more permanent place sorted out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As luck would have it we have plenty of natural coal lining the walls so there is no need to burn wood in order to make metal bars, therefore I've also ordered the construction of 2 iron minning picks and some weapons and armour in case we need it in an emergency.

9th of Slate

As me an' and a couple of lads were doing the occasional surface rounds and checks around the entrance to our fortress, a strange sight meet our eyes...
A horde of people and what seemed like animals appeared over the horizon heading right for our fortress. Someone behind me uttered,"Oh Armok, its an invasion force", after a brief moment with a hand over my eyes I saw what it really was.. something much worse then a invasion force.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It took 3 days for the swarm of 24 new migrants to arrive, totalling our current population at 40.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Well at the very least our construction will proceed at a faster-pace.

24th of Slate
After getting the new migrants settled in, the construction for surface fortifications and hook up to the new entry way has began.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After admiring the beginning of construction on the fort walls, a weird chill run up my spine then suddenly somebody shouted at the top of their lungs, "By Armok's mistresses sweet tits! what the hell is that?!!"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"Oh shit.."

It will probably slap a seal or something and run of. Or be horribly mauled if decides to tangle with a polar bear.

They decided to leave my fortress via the circus because the front door was locked to keep Goblins out.  THAT should be an interesting trip back to the Mountainhome.

Man, I wish we had a decent number of polar bears . I saw ONE during my entire reign.

Have some doors put in and LOCK those suckers. Then, at the right time, let it in and trap it in a pit.

From the journal of the miner Artimaus

Well, it has been interesting here in this frozen wasteland. And by interesting I mean a COMPLETE FREAKING NIGHTMARE. DIG THIS, DIG THAT, TOO COLD TO HOLD A PICK? BIG FREAKING WOOP. LOST A FINGER TO FROSTBITE? TOO FREAKING BAD. I was sorely mistaken in thinking that it would be warmer underground. They don't call it cold stone for nothing. I actually prefer the snow. At least it numbs you after awhile. The stone cuts you while simultaneously freezing the wound. I loathe the dwarf that chose this place. Even if it was the King.

Excerpt from "Chief Cook" Overseer Rendell's Journal: Fourth Entry

25th of Slate
As the terrible Weremonitor was sighted, it turns out that by coincidence that our lead-huntsmen Javier was in the area out on one of his routine hunts.
It seems that both of them have the same target, a random Muskox that was wandering near by. The Weremonitor moves towards the Muskox, Javier sees the beast beginning to chase HIS quarry "NO BODY HURTS MY PREY BUT ME!!" he yells as he enters a blood rage and charges forward after the werebeast.

The Muskox, Werebeast and Javier begins a chase that lasts most of the night, with the Muskox running from the Werebeast and the Javier chasing the Werebeast from behind with none of the combatants able to quite reach their intended target. So the 3 form a line stretching across the snowy glacier.

Eventually the morning comes, and as Sun rises across the horizon the Werebeast transforms back into his original form, a weak puny goblin appears in the snow... which Javier pummels into the ground with his handy crossbow taking no damage except a bruised arm and upper-leg. As his blood-lust begins ebb, he narrows his eyes at the elusive Muskox which managed to escape both of its pursuers and mutters, "One day.. one day" as he makes his way back to the fort.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As a reward for his bravery Javier has made Sheriff.

6th of Felsite
It seems our previous Overseer Bp920091 decides to take a well earned break and retires to let out his creative side.

14th of Felsite
Bp90091 constructs a legendary Tetrahedrite throne artifact.

For some reason he seems to have made the spikes surrounding the throne completely out of sheep's wool, we cant have people accidentally harming themselves can we?

16 of Felsite
The mining team as been ordered to carve out rooms for our population, no man, woman or child will want for a place to sleep at night... whether they have a bed to sleep on is another matter, as we are slowly running low on wood. I hope a caravan arrives soon with wood so we can increase our supply. Also Artimaus and Feylers have become legendary miners, a shinning example for others in our mining team.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

19th of Felsite
An Elven carven arrived today, Armok knows why they would bother comming out here in the middle of nowhere.
The Elfs didn't have a single piece of wood for sale, they properly didn't want us making beds and sleeping on their holy tree gods or something, so it seem that most of the population is still going to sleep on the cavern floor. I settled for buying some barrels filled with alcohol and wooden cages, some of which were filled with exotic animals, ha! I got plans for you lot.

27th of Felsite
I've ordered the construction of shafts that go deep into the eath in order to ascertain the rumours about a vast underground forest existing below us are true, also I've designated sites on the glacier for cage traps hoping we may catch one of the rare wandering polar bears that have been seen in the area.
Summer is close at hand hopefully it will warmer then it is now, however I have my doubts.

oh boy we're breaching the caverns

welp, I sure hope somebody properly installs a sealant gate to keep the horrible uglies from coming up. also make sure to do moss maintenance because it'll muck up sand/clay collection if it exists, and it will DEFINITELY muck up farming on soil layers. I forget exactly how, but I know that there's a way to prevent moss from growing in a stone layer, and then muddy it up so that you can farm it.

eh. I personally just find the caverns more of a bother than they're worth, because of the moss.

Also. Someone needs to design plans for a drowning chamber that can be exposed to the elements and then heated with magma at will.

Excerpt from "Chief Cook" Overseer Rendell's Journal: Fifth Entry

22nd of Hematite
More migrants are seen on the horizen heading towards the fort, they appear to have heard of our tremendous wealth and serene sights... which gives me the idea that the propaganda minister at Mountain-home might have a hand in this...

17th of Malachite
Still no chasm found after nearly 2 months straight of digging, even after 40 tiles down with two branching tunnels extending from the shaft. So for now I have ordered a halt to further exploration in the tunnels in order to speed up our other current excavation sites.

27th of Malachite
After some deliberation the excavation of some burial rooms has been planned in-case an unfortunate fellow dwarf accidentally perishes, we don't want some poor bastard's corpse lying in a well travelled corridor stinking up the place.

8th of Galena
The orders for the construction of some high-class apartments has been issued to be given to leading members of society... I hope the workers finish it quickly so I can stop sleeping in the dormitories with the rest of the smelly plebs...

15th of Galena
A dwarf by the name of Risen withdraws from society, probably following the example of our past Overseer Bp920091.

17th of Galena
A human caravan from Olatpesor has arrived, and unlike the Elves they have brought a large supply of wood with them and have a great love for the masses of mugs we have cluttering around the place. After buying the wood we can finally construct some beds so the people can stop sleeping on the muddy ground. Also some more iron and coal have also been bought from the humans to increase our weapons and armour industries.

20th of Galena
The dwarf Risen have constructed a legendary oaken puzzlebox.

23rd of Galena
The construction of the burial rooms has been completed, all that is needed is some more coffins to fill the rooms.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I hope I wont need to use them any time soon hahaha.

28th of Galena
By the end of Summer the above ground Fort and entryway with a fully working drawbridge has been finally finished, (the lever for activating it is located in the south-west corner of the grand dining-hall) the construction of some defences puts the lads at ease especially after the recent werebeast attack.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As the end of Summer approaches, it only gets colder from here on out.. at the least we able to shut our selves off from invading enemies if we so need.. I hope it doesn't come to that, however a chill runs up my spine.. I feel that darker days are coming, as we move into Autumn.

Excerpt from "Chief Cook" Overseer Rendell's Journal: Sixth Entry

19th of Limestone
To start the training of some soldiers for our fortress, the construction of a barracks is being planned. I've also decided to take an active role in our military, so henceforth I proclaim myself as Militia-commander of Mirroredfreezes, as a side thought I have also set a site for a hospital in-case any unfortunate enough dwarf that happens to be under my command sustains heavy injuries in any future combat.

21st of Limestone
The human caravan leaves today, bringing dwarven mugs to human settlements and towns across the globe, come to Mirroredfreezes they cry they have really good mugs for sell.

10th of Sandstone
In order to supplement our warrior-dwarfs, I've instructed our resident animal-trainer Hostergaard to turn our nice lovably dog population into vicious blood thirsty war-dogs.

Hopefully they will be able to guard against and thieves or snatchers they may try to enter the fort, or at the very lest take some hits for our fighting dwarfs.

23rd of Sanstone
The beginning of a secret construction of a speical facility begins today, all dwarfs that partook in building it are sworn to secrecy.

25th of Sandstone

Since we cant build wooden bins, in order to save space in our warehouses we have to settle for building iron ones, and thanks to the large iron-ore veins located around the area we have began production at full pace. Also some more migrants moved in today, putting our total population at 61.

17th of Timber
After spending the afternoon wandering the windy corridors of the fortress with the freshly recruited batch of soldiers, displaying our new fine iron weapons and armour. We hear the sound of quickly running feet~

~A runner dwarf approaches "Overseer we have reports of a goblin ambush in the east", "To arms men, we have goblins to slay!" I yell as me, Javier and 3 others warrior-dwarfs run towards the entryway.

Excerpt from "Chief Cook" Overseer Rendell's Journal: Seventh Entry

The Goblin raid of Mirroredfreezes lead by the Goblin-crossbowmen Zolak Ureratu in the Autumn of 552

As we begin our rapid sprint to the drawbridge in order to fight off the goblin menace, a rapid succession of events did occur.

First the mason Limul Medtobkod becomes possessed, babbling as loud as his voice could go and spraying projectile green vomit all over our recently smoothed walls. Secondly the outpost liaison Morul Domasnecik from mountain-home arrives.. unfortunately near the invading forces of goblins, which he is then viciously set upon and brutally murdered. And lastly a Dwarven-caraven from Kuthdengoddom arrives from the north-west, heading to our recently troubled fortress.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After murdering the liaison, the goblins begin their march towards the fort....straight into the path of one of our 3 cage traps in area, they were made for the purpose of capturing polar-bears, but have failed to capture anything at all, but one stray Muskox and now the Goblin raid leader himself!

The rest of the goblins seems unsure of what to do next, and proceeds to begin to mill around their trapped leader, The merchants use this time to cross the drawbridge into the safety of the fort.

Hostergaard's adopted pet cat moves to close to the party of goblins, and one goblin spots the pet and proceeds to chase the cat close to our side of the fort. I send a group of soldiers to intercept the goblin, and they manage to kill the vile being.

Meanwhile Sheriff Javier arrives on the scene, and proceeds to fire his crossbow over a mighty distance, killing one goblin and heavily wounding the rest.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The goblins grow disheartened, and begin a retreat from Javier's bolts.. Javier satisfied at this returns to the fort to have a sleep, allowing the goblin forces to successfully escape. The rest of the soilders follow Javier's example and proceed to drop all their weapons and go back to work..
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In any case a successful victory!! all that's left to do is bring the caged goblins leader into to the fort and parade him around for all to see.

I wonder what happened to Hostergaard's cat?

Oh no...

Coffins are a waste of resources and space. Build stone slabs at the mason's workshop, then when someone dies (like the cat), have them Dumped to a garbage dump underneath a bridge, lower the bridge onto the corpse, and engrave a slab with their name and install it. It works just as well as burial for preventing corpses, but you can stick them in the statue garden, and they don't block pathing.
