You are a full-time hunter/butcher/tanner

2nd Malachite:

Javier keeps hunting, but after a word with him, he's aiming for the heads of animals now, not for their legs.

Additionally, ive had workshops constructed that can make pretty much everything that we will need (for now)

Ive spent the past 2 months making rock pots (in place of barrels), and i expect to keep doing the same for a long time now.

We are going to probably export rock mugs for the first year (as we have a lot of rock).

9th Malachite:

I have comissioned the construction of TEN wooden bins, as some of our stockpiles are horribly inefficient

17th Malachite:

Some Migrants have Arrived!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

2 Dwarves actually, Two male dwarves by the names of Sensei_Shade and Deathsword, Sensei_Shade is a Great Presser with an aquequate Cheese Maker skill. Deathsword is a Great Cheese Maker and a novice fisherdwarf.

They look really lost, and they are arguing with each other about directions. I dont think they expected for there to be a fort here (to be honest, id be suprised in their shoes).

They are invited inside and put to work making stone pots and mugs (storage and trading)

Deathsword asks where the ocean is, so he can get to fishing. We all laugh at him, and say that that huge expanse of ice IS the ocean.

25th Malachite:

Apparently we have a bunch of mosquitos outside...

Not gigantic ones, small ones, the kind that are annoying.

How they are surviving while it is still frozen (By the way, it is MID SUMMER, the HOTTEST it is gonna get this year, and everything is still frozen)

28th Malachite:

As we've pretty much dug out all we need to do for the moment, ive had both miners try their hands at stonecrafting and masonry (hey, they are still working with stone, right?)

Sorry for not many pictures, but unless you want to see more pictures of Javier torturing the local wildlife, there's not much else i can show you...

5th Galena:

Since javier just brought in his fifth kill, ive had the kitchens start working on lavish meals (its not like we are hurting for food in ANY sense now).

He is still sleeping in the butcher's shop though... He told me that the skulls help him sleep or something.

22nd Galena:

I have had a finished goods stockpile carved out behind the initial workshops, so we can actually store said finished goods in a place that does not clutter up the place

27th Galena:

Ive been promoted to the expedition leader apparently.... Although i was pretty sure i was the one that was leading it in the first place...

Lavish meals hurt noons early on,as they attract goblins from wealth(more wealth=more goblins during ambushes/sieges)

18th Limestone:

our pair of dogs has given birth to two puppies

Ive got a gem stockpile under out jewler's workshop (that noone knows how to use)

4th Sandstone:

Not much is happening right now, the farmers are keeping up with food production, the kitchens have made enough food for at least a year, with more raw meat sitting in barrels below the kitchen, and the Still is usually running around the clock.

7th Sandstone:

More Migrants! Normally i dont like them, but we do need the labor

Four of them this time, Di, who is a combination doctor/Potash Maker, another dwarf who is a great Metalsmith, furnace operator, and weaponsmith (Awesome thing to see), and a Butcher with a Waxworker buddy.

For now, we dont quite know what to do with the metalsmith, as we dont have a metal industry up yet, but he's gonna be really good at it when we do.

Additionally, Javier has started going after the gigantic elephant seals that we have around here. They should provide us plenty of food for the time being (Assuming he kills them and doesnt just shoot them until they die of blood loss).

3rd Timber:

More Animals. We now have 4 "Little Penguins" running around outside, as well as a gigantic polar bear.

Additionally, since we have run out of bins, i have comissioned FIVE more of them.

17th Timber:

The Caravan, along with out outpost liason has arrived!

Time to take all of those mugs that we have been making for the past nine months to the trade depot.

5th Moonstone:

After looking at all of the merchant's wares, we took a few things here and there, nothing major. They had no wood (plenty of things made OUT of wood, but no wood). We traded a few dozen mugs for it, but we have PLENTY of mugs remaining.

The rest of my turn should be up tonight.

Without me,  half our fort would be starving!
We need to putt some of that leather to use!
Also, I wish to become military once we get more hunters

On the wall is a masterful engraving of a dwarf and musk oxen in chert.
The dwarf is laughing. The musk oxen are screaming.
The artwork refers to the killing of musk oxen by Javier on the 5th of galena

6th Moonstone:

The outpost liason met with me and asked me what i wanted them to come with next year. The first word out of my mouth was "Wood," followed by a LONG list of pretty much everything a fortress would need (pretty much everything, seeds, splints, leather, ect.)

25th Moonstone:
The outpost liason gave me this list of the items that they wanted to see next year, and would be willing to pay a premium for.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The merchants also left here, looking VERY happy to be getting back to warmer climates (you know, those places that have never heard of snow before)

8th Opal:

In an effort to liven things up here, ive ordered the construction of our initial well. As we are rigtht next to an ocean that apparently has an aquifer underneath it, that water is gonna be salty. So, what we need to do is to create a cistern that is made out of 100% constructed materials!. Also, the water needs to be pumped into the cistern to actually make it drinkable (a nice job for the next overseer).

20th Opal:

We have hit aquifer, the wall of it at least

27th Opal:

All of that practice that our two miners got earlier has been put to use, and the well has been entirely dug out, and the entryway for the water is slowly filling up

28th Opal:

The doors next to the well are installed now, and Deathsword apparently spends all of his time looking at the slowly filling well...

8th Obsidian:

As we have a bunch of dwarves just standing around, ive had those who were not doing anything to start smoothing the floors of our dining area and barracks (you know, so we have something smooth to stare at).

7th Obsidian:

Feylers ran by Deathsword and apparently snapped him out of his trance. Deathsword got up and is now just standing in our dining hall as everyone else works (I think he has some problems).

8th Obsidian:

On the bright side, it looks like the aquifer that we punctured is NOT salty, so we dont need to construct the entire well, we just need to pump it in.

24th Obsidian:

We just got a report that "A Thief Has Stolen A Bronze Pick!" It was one of the Two additional picks that i bought from the traders that came, our dwarves just apparently didnt get around to putting it away...

27th Obsidian:

After moving the entirelty of our weapons deep inside the fort, we got a message that a "A Thief Has Stolen A Copper Pick!" Which is a strange statement, since none of the migrants showed up with any additional picks, and both the miners have their picks, and we have the one other pick we bought from the traders in a stockpile already...

1 Granite:

After a year running the fort of Mirroredfreezes, i feel that it is time that i step down and let someone else take up the charge. Ill be quite content to stay underground, keep making stone pots, and broker trade deals with the caravans when they come for quite some time.

Here is where the fort stands at the end of the year:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Save should be going up shortly (im just gonna copypaste my whole DF folder into it, Dwarf Therapist and all).

"The Reign of Overseer Rendell" or "The Rise of the Mad Cook"

Excerpt from "Chief Cook" Overseer Rendell's Journal: Second Entry

Well Journal (Plus any of you other sneaky bastards sneaking a peek a me journal behind my back while I wasn't looking), here is the story on how I became the Overseer of Mirroredfreezes.

Aye me and a couple of the lads, laularukyrumo, Artimaus and that MinethatCrackers were sitting in the pub while I was regaling them with a story from my past exploits from the days I was still in the legion (plus Javier with that chill-inducing stare he always has, was sitting in the corner with a couple of those freaky skulls he has been carrying around recently). "So did I tell you about the time I single-handily defeated the mono-headed hydra of Blackgravel" I said,  "How could he be a Hyda if he only had one head?!" MinethatCrackers exclaimed, "Well its simple yah dunce", I speedily said while grabbing for another beer " It..eh.... lost its other heads in my past battles with the beast.. ya see.. eh.. I was tracking it ya know and.."~~

I awoke the following morning with a splitting headache most likely from the brooze we part-took of from the night before, to the shouts that I was voted in as the new Overseer for the current term. Apparently the lads believed me wild booze-conjured tales and I was nominated for Overseer. I put my hand to my throbbing temples and I thought to myself that it wasn't going to go away anytime soon.

End Excerpt

Dworf me please! As an animal trainer. This fortress must capture some polar bears, breed them and train them for war. War polar bears!  :o

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh, and get some baby seals or something for breeding and clubbing.

They decided to leave my fortress via the circus because the front door was locked to keep Goblins out.  THAT should be an interesting trip back to the Mountainhome.
