Island Embark
« on: December 07, 2012, 02:58:55 pm »

So I'm going through my fortress fairly well.  Early summer rolls around and I eagerly await the first wave of migrants. It's late summer, and I still haven't gotten any yet - this is unusual.  Now I'm no DF expert, but I've ALWAYS gotten migrants around early/mid summer.  I think I may remember settling on an island, but I'm not entirely sure.  I won't know for sure until I wait for the autumn when the trading caravan SHOULD arrive, but the idea got me curious and I may abandon this fortress and try an island-fortress if this one ends up not being sea-locked.

So what complications will an island-fortress face?  What preparations should I make during the first few years?  Am I correct in assuming my only source of more dwarves would be babies from my 2 females that I have right now?

Complications?
Well.. trade caravans will be harder to get I reckon, and migrants as well but I could be wrong.

You mean you can still get migrants and caravans even if the land you embarked on has no civilizations and is entirely covered with water?
That's odd.

The #1 complication I've faced on island fortresses is boredom. The goblins never show up. You don't even have elves to mess with! No human traders either, if you needed something from them.

No. Unless its been changed quite recently, I think migrants should behave normally.

If your entire embark is covered with water, then migrants will probably drown when they spawn. Although thats unlikely to be your most pressing problem, since all your dwarves will also be drowning.

I think if you have a land connection with the edge of the map you will get migrants and the dwarven trader. I did onetime play on an island entirely surrounded by water (back in 40d) and I of course didn't get migrants.

What if monkeys created civilizations on the moon?

The only case in which you won't get migrants SHOULD be if the outer edges are all water. In that case you won't even get the Dwarven caravan.

Chances are you just haven't made wealth enough. There should be a 'Attracted no migrants this season' message.

I can confirm that on an island embark you will get no migrants at all. I was hopeing to find out if a roc could unwelcomably visit an island embark site but the boredome thing...

Unless your fort is completely surrounded by water from the fortress view, it doesn't mean anything at all. If you embarked on an island, no big deal; caravans and migrants don't actually move across the world map yet, at least not in ways that recognize inhibiting features like rivers or oceans.

yes they do actually.  On an island you'll get two migrant waves and one caravan which is hard coded and then after that, nothing.  ever.

Being able to embark on an island that has water on all map edges requires either a lot of luck, or more commonly deliberate tinkering with worldgen to produce said islands.
