Why is my bridge breaking?
« on: December 07, 2012, 09:56:43 am »

I have a somewhat ingenious death machine I built, but I am having some issues with the platform breaking when it's opened.

I have my fort as a large shaft, with a waterfall in the center that leads into a sewer system/trap-filled dungeon. The prison's execution chamber turns off the water fall so a prisoner can be placed on a platform, then sealed in a room when the floodgates are re-opened and they are not just dropped into the sewers, but propelled by a waterfall.

The bridge itself is surrounded by floor grates, and I am wondering if perhaps this is the reason why the bridge breaks back into it's components when opened?

Floor grates do not count as floor. in example, you can not attach a floor grate to another floor grate. Adding a floor anywhere will usually solve this problem.

In other words, the bridge is not supported properly. Bridges that retract need support from at least one tile on one edge.

This is a bad example; to put floor grates into the corners of the room, there needed to be floor grates to walk on to get to them.

But I will change a couple to regular floors for the bridge; that much seems to be true.

EDIT: Working now. I do have one more question though: is it true that carving fortifications at the edge of a map will allow water to drain out?

Definitely true.  Water and Magma, both can be drained this way.

In that case though you aren't attaching a floor grate to another floor grate, you are attaching a floor grate to the corner of the room and just happen to need to stand on another floor grate while you do so.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

However, there is a small bug in that behavior which causes certain tiles near the upper-left and lower-left to not properly provide support.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
