How about if we make the painfulness variable, and controllable via worldgen, init, and/or RAW parameters?

Or, since this is probably an adventurer (going by days?  Almost must be), it could be based on the level of reading skill.
Or perhaps this is a reason to add the learning skill to adventure mode, and it could be a combination of that and reading.
