Goblin Invasion question
« on: January 06, 2008, 03:20:00 am »

I got a couple goblin invasions some time in my 3rd or 4th year.  It was good killing, got tons of loot.  Then there was a drought of a couple years of no attacks, and I started to get worried, (because I wouldn't be able to throw money (loot) at the traders with no care/AND there were no bloody arena fights  :( ), and read on the forums why.  One thing I heard was that if you started your economy up, they would attack.  So I did, and now they wont stop.  They come at you maybe one real-time minute after the last attack fled.  I have a primarily cage trap defense and I'm hurrying to throw the goblins off my death tower in time to get them reloaded.  Sometimes I'm in the middle of goblins splatting when "a vile darkness..." appears.  I feel kinda guilty then, like I was caught red-handed.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else gets these practically non-stop invasions.

Lucky bastard. I wish I got even one siege every 2 years.

I just wish I had more cages, then I wouldn't mind so much.  But being in the tundra map I am, I'm scarce in wooden objects.

I read a couple of times about these execution towers. How do they work? You build a very tall structure, that's all right, but how do you throw gobbos (or dwarves for that matter) off it?

I dont know how to throw dwarves out of it.  Have you heard of it being done?

Use for activity zones, put down a pit/pond and then press [P] to designate which animal/goblin you want to throw off, and voila  :)  Just dont try to do it with thieves, they run away from you as soon as you open the cage.

I never heard about dwarves being specifically thrown off execution towers, I heard separately about dwarves executed and execution towers, and I linked the two concepts. Actually the author one of the first posts I read about DF was writing horrified about "magma rooms, where unwanted dwarves are... processed?" so I'm not new to this butchering scheme but I still feel some loyalty to my men.

However, on the subject of drowning chambers. Filling them is OK. How do I drain them afterwards? To drain, I need to move the water to a deeper chamber, but then it'll be in the deeper chamber that also has to be drained even deeper etc.
(Purely theoretical question so far, I've yet to engineer anything.)

Well to kill of dwarves a generally quick solution is to kill them with a drawbridge (lowering it onto a recruited dwarf that was stationed where it will be lowered), making them go after that one giant spider called Chancedanus the Ever-Bleeding Void of Sacks,  or giving them a spear and another newb a spear, and letting them go and spar.

Drowning chambers aren't really effecient anymore since water deeper than 2 needs to drain somewhere, unlike in the older 2d version it would just dry up if the source was cut.

To drain, I think grates will work.  You'll have to use a lever to open and close them up.  Just grates, nothing beneath them is needed. The water will just go away.
