Gnomoria, Towns and Dwarf Fortress

I just heard about Gnomoria and Towns last night. Has anyone played them?

I am wondering exactly what the main differences between them and Dwarf Fortress are.

Graphics are nice, but the fact is Dwarf Fortress has tons of gameplay mechanics and content in it that no other game comes close to producing, while also being (somewhat) realistic. Gnomoria looks like it would be like playing DF completely through StoneSense, but would it really? Or would it just be a graphically inferior Game of Dwarves/Dungeon Keeper?

They are both Dwarf Fortress for Casuals. Very boring and missing the depth of DF.

That's my opinion.

There is a lot of "lets play"s on the internet if you want to get a closer look.
So far I only red a bit about Gnomoria. Last time I checked it was still work in progress with some potential.

Edit: yup, it's still in alpha "...The release date is TBD."

If I wanted graphics, I would play Crysis. (I do play Crysis, but that's aside the point.) I play Dwarf Fortress because of the gameplay. Gnomoria and Towns lack all of the depth that Dwarf Fortress offers. I like a challenge, and DF gives it to me. I can't play casual games - I'm literally incapable of it. I get bored within five minutes and shut it off.

That's not to say that Gnomoria and Towns suck, though. I've never played them, and I can't judge how good they are. I can just say that they're not for me. (I do think they could've been a bit more original, though.)

Yes, but if you could have Dwarf Fortress gameplay with Crysis graphics, would you not want that?

That is precisely why I came here asking about these games. I was wondering if they are DF with better graphics, or DF-lite with visuals to help noobs. :p

Yes, but if you could have Dwarf Fortress gameplay with Crysis graphics, would you not want that?

I'm afraid that would actually induce insanity in a few many persons. The truth is - such a thing already exists. It is concealed within a black box in the Mariana trench with Sumerian text inscribed below it. When the world is ready, that box will be opened.

Of course. I think most games these days could be more original, but sadly, most of the original ideas for games have been taken. Still, some games (not those) claim to be a "better Dwarf Fortress", which isn't inspiration. That's directly copying something and trying to prove you could've done it better.

Nah.  Real Life doesn't tolerate violations of conservation of energy and conservation of matter.

I looked up Gnomoria, and found its visuals wanting. Stonesense looks better.

This kinda defeats the whole purpose of that game.

Tbh for me it comes down to the UI, despite the common complaint that dwarf fortresses UI is terrible I find it perfect for what it needs to achieve so that aside from slight inconsistencies in the location of related things across different menus the whole keyboard driven system works well. In gnomoria it is a clunky mouse based thing whose original goal was to improve on dwarf fortress' ideas but in the end is actually a step back. All of this is independent of graphics, which I actually also quite enjoy being ASCII.

Dwarf fortress is just a better game overall, currently the rate limiting factor is the learning curve for the first 3ish forts which I can say doesn't matter to me at all if I'm getting the deeper more thought out game.

I like the UI too, but it could be MUCH better. All it needs, really, is more mouse uses. Navigating menus and dealing with multiple things is much more efficient with a mouse. This is one of the reasons so many people use Dwarf Therapist. Personally, I don't. I just use the keyboard menus because they are not a clusterfuck of grids and tiny sideways words; even though I can use a mouse, I can't tell what I am doing. I'd rather just be able to use the mouse in DF without a 3rd party tool for more than just some basic selection stuff.
