Maybe a dumb question.
« on: January 05, 2008, 11:39:00 pm »

I've seen people building big structures ( dwarf sitting on a throne and other large above ground buildings)

How do people do this?

I can't seem to make walls ontop of other walls.

Walls act as floors on the ground above them, so if you make a wall on ground level, and then try to above, you cant, unless you've got a stairway going up from ground level and then another down stairway going down from the level above.

And this is possible on the surface?

Anywhere a dwarf can walk, you can build something.

First off, you aren't trying to build the second floor before the first and stairs is complete, are you?

Hmm.. i don't think so.
i build a 2x2 section of walls, then i build an upstair say, to the right of it.

code:

[][]
[][]>

But i don't know where to build the down stair.
If i try to put it on top of any of those walls, or the upstair, it tells me "Blocked"

So i'm not sure how i'm supposed to get some down stairs linked to the upstairs.

I'm new to the z axis game, so this is all new to me.

You put the Down stair on the Up stair, on the z-level above it.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Don't worry, took me a while to figure that one out too.

To join adjacent tiles 1 level up or down use ramps.

<trivia>
AFAIK the ramp is the only single terrain feature with map references from multiple points-of-view, from above as a downward-sloping ramp and from below as upward-sloping.  In other words a ramp exists in two z locations even though it's a single object, and I think it's the only object that does that.

I was under the impression that ramps can only be used by caravans? Can dwarfs go up and down ramps as well?

Yes, dwarves use ramps as well.
