The embark screen is a lying bastard.
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:31:57 pm »

I was told I'd have clay, deep metal and flux.

Dfhack prospector tells me that the only metal is 34 units of native gold. What now? Trade for the metals?

Alternatively, does prospector not see stuff that's in areas that are unrevealed? It's not showing any adamantium either.

I don't believe it does...I have to reveal, prospect and then unreveal.

Yup, reveal, prospect, unreveal. I remember getting a big fat "you have no iron go fuck yourself", only to find hemanite at the bottom of my volcano, after a magma accident that involved magma leaving the volcano, and then being pumped back into it. It fell all the way down and revealed the candy spire, along with other goodies.

"prospect all" or "prospect -a", I forget which one of those shows everything.

The site finder does lie though.

You can use prospect before embarking.

prospect all

and pre-embark prospect is an estimate.

It is quite possible to not have any adamantine. The embark window, the leftmost one where you resize your actual fort, is divided into imaginary groups of 2x2 embark tiles; each of these 2x2 areas has a adamantine spire randomly placed randomly in one of the embark tiles.

It would look something like this:
Code: [Select]
11223344
11223344
55667788
55667788
Each group of numbers is one tile group, and there's a spire for each group.
The actual adamantine placement could be something like:
Code: [Select]
XAXXAXXX
XXXAXXAX
AXXAAXXX
XXXXXXXA
Furthermore, each embark window (the 16x16 tiles in the leftmost window) has one college.

TLDR VERSION:
It's very possible that you have no important metals. dfhack's "prospect all" command from the embark screen gives an estimate; used after embark, it gives actual stats.

The site finder did not lie, you have deep metal, just a ridiculously low amount.

DFhacks estimate shows how much there is and it is relatively exact. It does not show adamantine with "reveal"-"prospect", you need to use "reveal hell"-"prospect. Adamantine tubes are blacked out with using just "reveal", to prevent a problem where "reveal" unleashed the HFS in previous versions.

I have had the site search lie.

I genned a world last night, and was looking for a site with shallow metals, deep metals, and on a river. All the spots it marked had 1 single biome in the area map, and not a single one had Shallow Metals.

Having 34 gold as your ONLY metal is an achievement in and of itself. I've never done that, except for once on purpose.

I would have to agree. Show of hands, who was told there'd be no flux only to drown in it? Not that that's a bad thing, but it's wierd when I expect to need flux imports only to have a massive portion of the fortress carved from chalk/dolomite.

I think the problem with flux is the embark window only reports layers of flux stone. Marble can occur in clusters, so there are many sites with no flux as a layer stone, but plenty of marble clusters. Can't really rely on them though, you could just as easily have no marble clusters either.

Marble is strictly a layer stone. The only flux stone that isn't a layer stone is calcite, which appears as small clusters in either limestone or marble.
