The Bay12 Advance Wars By Web Games Thread... Thing
« on: December 04, 2012, 02:44:56 pm »

For the unaware, Advance Wars By Web is a remake of the game Advance Wars, except in online format and with all of the custom maps in the world. Also it supports up to 14 player combat (Although that's only with some roundabout techniques). For the REALLY unaware, Advance Wars is, in my mind, the mother of all TBS games. Bsaically, imagine a bunch of armies going at each other only to realise they're being manipulated by some other nation then ??? profit.

This thread is basically "Why don't we get all the Bay12 AWers to get together and generally mess around on cool maps". And lo, it exists. If you want to play a different and interesting game of AWBW, then this is the place to come. If you find a cool map and want to mess around on it, this is also the place to come. If you don't want to play, then get out of my thread.

To start with the gaming, I made a map which involves racing 36 APCs on a track filled to the brim with DISCIPLINary piperunners. So of course, I made a game of it ((Password is bay12games)). Of course, now I need players for it, so if anyone wants to join in, feel free. And if someone else wants to create a game, I may or may not join it depending on how fun the map looks. Have fun, everyone, and join the explosives.

Logical2U had a thread for this a while ago. Unfortunately, AWBW died on me for a while, and the games just stopped from there. AW are awesome games, I've spent over 3000 hours on them all... actually, I think I spent over 3000 hours on AW DS alone... and I spent more than that on the first two.

Won't be joining that game, I prefer the conventional batter your opposition. :P. Nice to see a thread again tho.

Logical2U had a thread for this a while ago. Unfortunately, AWBW died on me for a while, and the games just stopped from there.

Speak of the devil and he shall appear.

Just a warning from someone who's tried this before: Stick with small games (4 or less players). With games much bigger than that, the time between player turns can be so long that it just... gets boring. That's what ended up happening to me with most of the games I tried to play: I would be all over it for a while, burn out while waiting for my next turn, and then gradually grow tired of the entire process.

Also a thought on COs: you will probably find some COs are ridiculously overpowered (I'm looking at you, Kanbei). Consider trying to figure out what COs you should ban and what ones are fun to play against. (E.g. banning Lash on a map that's all properties, forests and mountains probably makes sense, but Lash on a 'regular' map can be interesting.) On a big multiplayer map it's often frustrating to have 'map attack' COs messing up things all over the place, too.
