Making an arena
« on: December 03, 2012, 10:17:33 pm »

I have been playing a while, I would concider myself to be experienced but I have never made an arena and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to go about making one?

Usually most arenas simply consist of a bunch of rooms connected to a big one and closed off with drawbridges. Then you have an exit from the big room that leads to a cage trap-filled corridor.

Throw the things you want to fight in their various rooms, and then release them into the big one. Let whatever is still standing at the end go into the cage trap corridor to be captured and repeat.

Arenas as a whole aren't really that useful except for player entertainment purposes and enemy disposal. Dwarves will flee at the sight of any sort of hostile unit, so it isn't like an arena provides them good thoughts or anything.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Also good for live combat training.

In case it wasn't obvious, I do know that dividing by zero is a mathematical impossibility. I do not know, however, how this dwarven calculator would react if anyone attempted the impossible. Please, someone try! xD
If you look back in the thread, some people did try, and they got 8008135, which is significant only in that the digits resemble the letter in "BOOBIES".
And so dwarf fortress solves yet another of lifes great mysteries.

It is lots of fun to let your military "practice" on some unarmed goblins  :)

I use clear glass walls to surround the arenas i make. The dwarfs can't actually see through (and don't get scared) but i can simulate
that they can.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

Better:
Use windows. Glass or gem, both are now entirely feasible. Construct a scaffolding of walls, building from up to down before deconstructing the walls - leaving your circle of windows suspended in the air.

Your supposed to let the winner free.  I can't wait to get a criminal.  So going to use this idea.

question if using windows can the dwarfs see the action, get scared ect?  Wish mentally screwed up dwarfs could enjoy violence.  I assume if they can see but can't get to the fight they would try to run and get interrupted by it?

Let the winners go free?!? What is this madness? You only get to go free if you manage to claw your way past the captured dragon and the entire standing army. Then you get to go free. :P

And yes, dwarves will be interrupted through windows and be afraid. Also keep in mind that windows are vulnerable to building destroyers, so if you plan on having trolls in your arena then windows can be a very bad idea.

Indeed. You only attain freedom if you cut a bloody swathe through your captors in an unfortunately timed accident.
