I'm not sure wether remote control would be possible. But drones are certainly an option, especially for boarding and injecting code.
My theory was this; Notch stated that you controlled the craft via the computer. If you could get a computer outside of the craft to control the craft, you've got yourself a drone. If we were feeling ambitious, we could make AI controlled drones.

we talk a lot about hacks, But if there is no world wide network, or wifi we are sort of screwed on that front, i highy doubt many people will install a lot of programs unless its from a reputable source, and the way the game is i bet most people will either code thier own stuff Or join a faction so they can get code from thier own people which they know wont shut of oxygen in the middle of a battle.

Iron : i think if we can gather all the programmers from Bay12 to play and code stuff for only us we will do very well indeed. I for one will help contribute to the programs and will spend many sleepless nights making new things! ( moslty offensive cracks and hacks :P nothing wins you a battle like oxygen straved enemies )

The FAQ stated that there would likely be some sort of network. Also, floppy disks for transporting data manually.

Wow, I can feel the testosterone kicking in already in anticipation of such an epic, amazing game.

ISC's got anywhere from 500-1000 members, kind of organized like a "galactic senate" or other treaty organization.  It's not one group, but a number of "signatory" groups.  Think Space NATO.  HA's got approximately 600 members and is devoted to wiping out and harvesting the souls of everyone else in the galaxy.  So, think the Necromongers.  Or Goonswarm.

so this hasn't even yet started and casual players are already screwed?

I think the fact that they have hacks and backdoors has screwed all the casual gamers. I was looking forward to this. But not now. I'll wait to see reviews from some non-coders.

none coders will be fine, jump in with a group and you have your self a source of safe code... like you could join the rest of the bay12 community :P

There'll be single player, too. Also, if you don't wanna join a server that has that stuff, you can make your own.

I'm not sure wether remote control would be possible. But drones are certainly an option, especially for boarding and injecting code.

Or boarding yourself, through a capsule, then hacking with the help of your floppy disk. That's the only type of hack (I really doubt backdoor for now) doable I see so far.

To me, a little ship is better, cause you're a really smaller target. Even if you have a weak hull, if it's not hit, you're good. I think that the aim will be the main part of a fight (and so automated turrets). Hitting a small ship would require to be really accurate (and most people aren't).

An interesting thing to do would be to get a spy in the other big communities. Some volunteers to get in HA and UNSC, which will then show us their programs ?
About oxygen, i don't know if there will be that. In the multiplayer footage (which was only Quake-like fight into a ship), they were able to get outside, without dieing (as long as they didn't jumped in the void), and the ship was open. Also, the skins were the ones of robots, but that's placeholder, so, we don't know.

Those demos were just a test of the multiplayer capability and weapons hit detection, he's only really just starting on the ship design itself right now as far as I can tell.  Wanted to get the multiplayer groundwork and basic engine capabilities off the ground first, to avoid the problems with Minecraft Multiplayer when that was still in alpha.  I don't think we'll have "spaaace windows!" in the release =p

Aye a anti virus is a good idea. But does anyone know how to make one here, those things time MASSIVE amounts of time to build. If anything building a firewall type program would be better ( and something I could do ) due to your only limiting instructions which can be done without your approval and blocking other things from happening in the first place.

Also we would have to use a unified OS to play on as well

I think we are going the wrong way about it and that we should take some inspiration from LCS by having sleepers in the various guilds which'll be formed. Become a trusted member and distribute a framework which many programs rely on (with obligatory backdoor or protocol to either gain access to many computers or to just shut them down). Let those guilds then build up and when they're either fighting or have many supplies trigger the attack and cripple the entire top guild(s) assuming the previous infiltrations work.

EDIT: If they rely on a flagship, make a specialised program that way there is less chance of someone then detecting the attack beforehand as I imagine less people would be allowed to look into the source code to prevent leaks.

(All the above assume infiltration into a/many guild(s), where someone will be trusted enough to provide code for the guild(s)).

Well, an anti-virus isn't too hard when you know that the code will be a lot more simple than how it is now.

Yeah for that once simple virus. To build a antivirus you need to know. How that virus works, what it does, how it's coded, what it changes, and how it replicates. This is just one virus your talking about there being thousands of viruses being made in that world just like today.

You would need a extensive ingame lab just to be able to analyse them all. Then come up with patches on how to combat and get rid of these viruses and then package that into a nice little program which then has to be update every so often with a database which contains all the viruses and said fixes. And that's even the most basic part of it. You need someone to build and maintain the database someone to patch update and keep the antivirus in good nick and stop that antivirus from being used as a exploit.

And so so much more stuff. You would need a team constantly working on it, while a fire wall in its most simple of terms can be made to stop any rogue code from doing anything unwanted e.g .

Does this program alter code for oxygen systems?

Yes?: stop code from running and inform the user what program has tried to interact with this function

No?: let program run

Also I agree with having sleeper in all major guilds, we can then get them to upload horrible viruses.

I also take it our group will only consist of Bay12 people for added security, and will we have a TS channel ? If not then I can always set one up for us.

Not only that, but having an attack from the inside may get the higher-ups to question if they can trust others too. Could cause some sort of distrust within the ranks.

Quick question: those keys which were released before, what do they do exactly?

I would be willing to build a ingame firewall for everyone

If we are going to be spreading the Word of Toady throughout the multiverse together, we should probably use our own unique OS to keep this sort of thing from happening.  Not exactly a small order, I know.  It would only be distributed to Bay12ers and have fairly regular changes in case a copy of an older version was compromised, ideally.  Security by obscurity works wonders, even before you get to firewalls and other things.  If we don't have anyone with the skills or time to create one from scratch, we should at least modify whatever existing one we'll be using so as to be incompatible with any of the other ones out there.  Wouldn't want our enemies to have plug-and-play capabilities with our ships/stations/installations, y'know?

Currently, the one that seems to be the most developed is called Entropy, and is being developed by the HA guys for free distribution to anyone who wants it.  From what I gather, they themselves will be using a different OS based on it called ChaOS.  Given their expressed mission statement of "exterminate everything," expect Entropy and any derivatives of it to contain numerous built-in vulnerabilities for them to exploit.  It still seems like it'll be fairly widely used by trusting dupes who don't know any better, though, which presents certain opportunities  :P
