This game sounds a bit like Corneroids.

At least in the basic concept.

Chances are this will end up as a war between the fans as to who ripped off who and result in the death of Corneroids.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

There are lots of games about building a ship in space. Although, I have to say, 0x10c really doesn't look like Corneroids. While Blockade Runner and Corneroids use block system (Minecraft-like), everything will be prefab here (but customizable). Asteroids, planets and such won't be destructible (but minable). And I think it'll be more oriented mp fight.

I presume the Word of Toady will be in form of laser fire?
No. It will come in the form of this:
have a bunch of files that create files that create files, excellent.
The Cat-splosion virus. I can see it now...
Ox10c needs cloning vats or 3D printers.

There will be 3d printers. Was in the interview of Notch at least. Basically, you need the material (they aren't sure yet if there will be different materials), and then print something. Though, I'm not sure there will be cats.

...
Well, there goes the need for hangars. Goliath battleship, tons of 3d printers inside, print ships at will, then bring them back for the materials.

And print more 3D printers (with the scavenged rests of your enemy).

But they'd be smaller. :(

Just imagine...

A single guild/clan/fleet/whatever creates a slow-action virus that infects every computer on the server. After a year or so of casual gameplay, they activate the virus and drain the oxygen from every ship in the world. They then begin a periodic cycle of capturing ships and setting up blockades on spawns so that people have to pay inordinate amounts of money to roam freely, with all the resources in the hands of this one guild.

The guild sets up a series of oppressive laws to prevent rebellions, like no laser weapons or advanced tracking modules aboard non-guild ships. Violation of these laws results in a death squad destroying everything you own and forcing you to start from scratch.

I'm going to enjoy this game.

If that happens, I will be EXTREMELY happy. Seriously, who doesn't want to be either a rebel or a tyrannical government?

I think that you can always have at least a ship. Maybe they'll be more or less improved ships, but you can't prevent someone from owning one.

That kind of virus may be interesting in terms of gameplay, but isn't really realistic. Let's say that you have a sleeping virus. How would you activate it ? Keyboard output ? Better be onboard, and make stuff personnaly. Being able to interact with other computers while not being onboard ? In that case, you can pretty much destroy every computing device without viruses.
The only kind of virus I would see in game, is the sort of virus, with floppy disk, load and destroy the computer (erase all data), needing crew onboard of the enemy ship, making automated turrets useless, and that sort of thing. Or more subtle, change the data to make it miss, with as little margin as possible (and thus nearly undetectible).
You should look at the DCPU-16 documentation (even if it's not definitive) : http://dcpu.com/

Scelly9 : then, print parts of 3D printer, assemble, and then print more parts of 3D printer.

But I would definitively enjoy a rebel/tyran situation, and there's LOTS of potential for guilds fight and such.

Not really. Can someone destroy pretty much every computing device now? Well, they can, it's just really, really hard.

They can erase all data, or stuck it in an unending loop.

Personnally, i'm not a fan of the sub model, I feel it's like something that will prevent my friends to come play with me. I understand the cost of a server, but I think it's doable with only an initial cost (GW was like that for years).
Also, there's micro transaction and micro transaction. The TF2 model, although huge (not micro), I'm ok with it. I've done a few payments on it (ten dollars max, I think). On the other hand, there's micro transaction models that are based on paying for core/important features.

About the ship creation : look at that interview (more importantly the screen) : http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/29/notch-mega-interview-0x10c-micropayments-kickstarter-and-quantum-computing/2/
I aim for a solo ship, kind of a very small ship, with automated turrets and such. The big point in space games is the aiming, so I think a small ship is actually better than a big ship (depending on the crew number too).

There's something that I don't understand : they're going to simulate the ship CPU on the server. Wouldn't it be easier to emulate it on the player side (and therefore reducing costs ?). As long as the CPU isn't huge, and don't take over your real CPU. Is there a point in emulating it on the server (preventing hack of an already potential limitless computer ?) ?

No, the point of the subscription is to have your computers running, when you are off-line!
So the thing you are paying for is computer time on the server, depending of how much CPU power you need.
Notch said a long time ago that you would likely get a little computer power for free when you buy the game, if you want more, you gotta pay, and you pay for every power core running on your ship.
