Cornerroids is minecraft in space.
0x10c doesn't use blocks at all.
So far only the inside ship designer and fps mode is up, but he is taking multiplayer seriously this time, implementing it before any gameplay elements.

I could imagine someone DDoSing another player's ship, causing the whole game server to crash.
He also said viruses would be possible, yeah. When I join this Bay 12 space crew, I could engineer viruses. That would be fun. Forkbombs away!!

The idea seems interesting, although I guess some people won't like coding.

I don't really know about Assembler, but more about object oriented, so, i'll look into some compilers and such (which look rather interesting).

About virus, this seems interesting, but I don't really see how you will apply that. I guess you won't be able to control the enemy's computer. So I guess what could be an interesting thing, in a crew fight, is a spy, getting on the other ship, and hacking the computer :D (with floppy disk virus, maybe).

For files creating files, etc, I dont know if it's possible, considering the limitation of the computer, but you can erase every data (including the floppy disk) and even block the computer.

Although, the more interesting part I see is the automation of the ship. Using sensors and turrets, to get auto fire, maybe lockdown using doors, autopilot, etc. And also, protecting your computer :D

Far as it being like Firefly goes, you're a player or crew of players living inside a ship, rather than something like your average space sim where, for all intents and purposes, you ARE the ship.  Also, Notch said in his first press release about it that he wants to make it like Firefly =p

Subscription fee seems like it'll be low, but it's necessary.  It's going to be a persistent online world, hosted by Mojang, and servers don't run for free.  The only other option is a microtransaction model, which Notch has said he's against because it usually ends up with the average player paying more money than they would have with a sub.  The whole microtransaction model's based on basically making the player into one of those lab rats that keeps pushing the "pleasure" button until it starves to death.

Either way, I'm pretty excited about the game.  Capacity for customizing your ship seems virtually limitless, I'm already toying around with some designs in Minecraft and Google Sketchup.  Currently about 40 hours in on a massive 300-meter long cruiser I'm building in Tekkit, and even if it all turns out to be pissing in the wind compared to how things will actually work in the game I think it's my greatest MC creation yet.  If it turns out you can build a ship that big, I'm gonna need about 20 more guys to crew it when all's said and done, and y'all are welcome aboard any time.  We can bathe the galaxy in blood in the name of Armok, and Toady his prophet ;p

A team of hackers, all using and finding exploits for the 4-5 most popular OSes, and distributing their own OS with a backdoor would be really, really cool.

Personnally, i'm not a fan of the sub model, I feel it's like something that will prevent my friends to come play with me. I understand the cost of a server, but I think it's doable with only an initial cost (GW was like that for years).
Also, there's micro transaction and micro transaction. The TF2 model, although huge (not micro), I'm ok with it. I've done a few payments on it (ten dollars max, I think). On the other hand, there's micro transaction models that are based on paying for core/important features.

About the ship creation : look at that interview (more importantly the screen) : http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/29/notch-mega-interview-0x10c-micropayments-kickstarter-and-quantum-computing/2/
I aim for a solo ship, kind of a very small ship, with automated turrets and such. The big point in space games is the aiming, so I think a small ship is actually better than a big ship (depending on the crew number too).

There's something that I don't understand : they're going to simulate the ship CPU on the server. Wouldn't it be easier to emulate it on the player side (and therefore reducing costs ?). As long as the CPU isn't huge, and don't take over your real CPU. Is there a point in emulating it on the server (preventing hack of an already potential limitless computer ?) ?

And I think there will be some kind of organization (kind of private governments), it seems fitting with the theme/possibility (ships getting better being manned). So potential organizations fights.

I agree, however, there's a good chance that the lure of having a massive battleship might be just a bit too much for me.

I agree, but a lot of it depends on how the system is set up.  I am hopeful though!  I might even be able to apply some of my skills, hehehehehehehehe.

Well you shouldn't need to know assemply, alot of people over on the 0x10c forum have created c++/java/etc.-to-assembly programs. or something like that

The convertor are third program (I doubt anyone will actually do one IG). You would just have to check your program afterwards.

There's already some (a fuckton) emulators for the computer, if you want to try already.
