0x10c - Firefly-like Space Game from Mojang
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:33:08 pm »

So it seems like the pre-order alpha will probably be coming out in the next few months.  Notch has said that multiplayer will be included from the get-go, so is anyone interested in forming a Bay 12 group to conquer the galaxy and spread the word of Toady to the heathens?

If you don't know about it already, it's kind of like a post-apocalyptic cross between minecraft and elite with a Firefly-theme... that's about as well as I can describe it  :P You build a ship, then fly between asteroids and planets gathering resources, salvage derelicts, build space stations, et cetera, and use the stuff you find to build bigger ships, better generators, weapons, etc.  It all takes place in a "multiverse" which is, it seems now, a bunch of copies of a procedurally-generated galaxy you can switch between at will.  Sort of like server shards, but not really.  Either way, it's a persistent online world.

Oh, and your ship is run through an emulated, fully-programmable 16-bit computer.

Has anyone else been following this?  Found a couple topics on it but none had been posted in for at least a month, so I didn't wanna make thread bacon.

Derp, nm. Nothing wrong with bumping a month old topic, though.

Pit with a necromancer that you toss body parts into to get reanimated in DF = bacon generator... it sounded funnier in my head, tbh.

Isn't playing games one of the things you'd do to GET AWAY from coding? ugh.

Tell that to Minecraft mods ComputerCraft and RedPower, or to Garry's Mod mod WireMod.
(Ugh, the sentence structure there...)

Garrysmod reminds me.. anyone know of any games like this that are out now?  FTL I guess, but that wore out kinda fast.  Reminded me because I used to play SpaceMod for Garrysmod way back, but there are only about 3 servers left that run it and nobody's ever on =p

I presume the Word of Toady will be in form of laser fire?

In the absence of Magma, yes.

Wasn't familiar with necro etiquette in the Other Games sub-forum.

Darkmere:  As far as I can tell, the coding's going to be similar to Redstone in Minecraft:  A very fun and useful tool for advanced users, but not necessary to enjoy the game.

I am mostly looking forward to the programmable computers in this. Having glanced at the documentation for the CPU it seems fairly simple compared to the MIPS-architecture I have experience with so it shouldn't be too hard to get into it.

As a non-coder, I think putting coding in the game sets it us for commercial failure. I play Minecraft and never use the Redstone. However, if there is enough of the game outside  of coding, the coding will be irrelevant. But all the hype seems to center on the coding.

well, the only seriously detailed aspect we've been given is that the spaceships will have well modeled computers... everything else is up in the air at the moment, except for a couple of livestream's he's done, one of which only showed off a quake-like deathmatch mode.

As a non-coder, I think putting coding in the game sets it us for commercial failure. I play Minecraft and never use the Redstone. However, if there is enough of the game outside  of coding, the coding will be irrelevant. But all the hype seems to center on the coding.

One of the few things we know for sure is that programs will be able to be shared on some sort of floppy disc analogue, so you should be able to acquire any kind of program you need or want that way without having to code it yourself either by buying it, stealing it, getting it from your corporation/guild, etc.  Several OSes already exist for the in-game computer (the specifications for it have already been released) with varying degrees of user-friendliness as well.  Basically, by the time the public alpha build gets released we'll have a lot of the groundwork already done, and by the time of the official commercial release we'll surely have functioning programs for just about anything you can imagine widely available.

In addition to this, it's expected and almost guaranteed that the basic computer program will come pre-loaded with enough stuff to allow you to play normally right out of the box.  The coding aspect will just allow you to make programs that add more functionality, etc.  I'm still excited about it, and the hardest piece of coding I've ever done was an autohotkey script to force my copy of KoTOR 2 to run in an approximation of Borderless Windowed Mode to get the cutscenes working >.<

I'm a bit conflicted about that. On one hand, if the coding is optional, that's fine. Sometimes I just want to take a little while to futz around and build a cool ship.

On the other hand, I've heard literally nothing else about the game beyond "spaceships" and "fully coded computers" so the rest of it sounds just like minecraft--IN SPACE! which I've already played.

I don't think anyone here will begrudge a necro, as long as you have something relevant to post (even as little as "anyone still waiting on this?")
