CPU requires a fixed amount of power, so they can regulate it like that.
It does mean they are charging you for adding lasers and stuff.

If batteries do have a significant amount of storage, you could just charge up a battery bank during low-activity times, and feed from the batteries when you need it.

On another note, has anyone thought of the idea of a dedicated computer ship so that the combat ships can focus on weapons and shielding?

seems a bad idea, you'd wan't each ship as much independent as possible in combat because with each communication channel between ship there is a chance of someone interfering.

for security reason you'd want to have each ship transmitting an id asymmetrically signed, and a system to put other ships in 'combat mode' so that they won't accept any command and shut down any open communication channel until all ship not transmitting a valid signed id are destroyed.

would be a weak asymmetric key, of course, given the performance of the cpus... but whatever. enemy will be limited in the same way.

What could be done to mitigating hacking is to have randomly generating 1-ID codes for each ship that you make that the connection recognizes. The 1-ID code is hard-coded into that specific ship.

Destroyed or captured ships would send a signal that says they have been boarded or destroyed, and that 1-ID would then be blocked from the parent ship so that the attackers can't copy the code and masquerade as a friendly ship.

Additionally, if 2 ships end up with an identical 1-ID somehow, then the parent ship simply stops broadcasting or receiving from that ID. A second layer of checking could be added that would filter out espionage; If 2 ships have the same 1-ID, then the parent ship checks a SECOND ID and matches to the correct ship.

If 2 ships somehow have the same 1-ID and 2-ID, then it simply blocks connections from the ships.

We should have a standardized docking system with main power/fuel feeds in it. This way we can pool the generator capacity of everybody logged-off docked at the mothership.

By this point, you have a quarter of your opponents frantically trying to code a bruteforcer for your program, half just shooting the ships, and another quarter DDOSing the fuck out of you.

Yeah, I don't think distributed computing is safe or necessary for this. Authentication schemes are good, but don't make them crucial. A good system is one that can be easily turned off with minimal consequences. Unless its a bomb. Then that's sometimes against the design docs.

But think about it, one ship dedicated entirely to doing calculations, and the rest dedicated entirely to lasers, shields, and radio.

Why not break computing up and certralize power? Some kind of MASER turrets and big satalite dish butts with engines on struts for our ships?
One mothership hangs back and beams power to the drones/escorts up front. In a pinch, you could train multiple beams on an enemy and cause sensor jamming, overheating, and possible EM damage to unshielded electronics.

I think we're getting a bit too far. I hate to be a killjoy, but remember it's a game, and a game made by Notch (limitations like for MC). It's also a MMOish with sub (which means it can't be bullshit with tons of awesome features). We don't know yet what we will be able to do.

I doubt there will be a real internet into the game. It will be a network, which obviously will be limited. If the network is already implemented in the base computer, it will have a limited number of interactions.
If it's a "free open for all", it's turn in fest, everyone being able to hack everyone. If it's completly enclosed, no purpose. I think we can safely assume that will be something like data transfer, nothing active.
So, I doubt hacking will be a big part of this game (sadly), other than simple things (actually getting on the enemy ship, and such).

I'm glad it will have a single player mode. That should be fun! I'm disappointed that multiplayer will be like an MMO. I'd have preferred to have a choice from a bunch of smaller servers hosted by players. (Why can't we have that option? Shouldn't be too hard to host, as there would be far less people.) Plus, I don't usually play games that have monthly fees. Oh well. Maybe I'll change my mind. I don't know.
