Pit with a necromancer that you toss body parts into to get reanimated in DF = bacon generator... it sounded funnier in my head, tbh.
This is the tagline for Bay12.  "It sounded better in my head..."

Necro etiquette is as follows: If it's relevant, necro it.  DO NOT: "I agree."  DO: "So the developer just returned from the grave and posted an update."

Anyways, from all I've heard, code will be there as a tool of construction.  Some people will say "I don't want to code, I just want to push blocks" and other people will say "I don't want to build, I just want to fly ships."  In the same way that you can reconstruct identical objects someone else has made (SEE: Buildcraft templates and constructors) you'll be able to copy-paste code directly.  There will be PLENTY of free code out there for everyone to grab stock code.  But as with all things, personalization will help.  A basic engine control program will work, but if your ship is built differently than the original designer, then you may want to tweak the program to factor in your specific thrust profile.  Similarly, weapon targeting is fine, but if you've got your weapons spread differently, or composed of different guns, you may need to 'adjust to taste'.

In the end, programming will become a marketable skill though.  There will be readily available freebies, but your guild should probably get a good coder or two who can handle the finer details.  It's not something everyone has to fully understand.

So, here's an interview of Notch in PC Gamer, talking about the future of 0x10c, stuff like the multiverse and how not just guilds, but even a single ship could benefit from having a coder on board, given the monthly fee and all that. It's pretty recent, but I'm concerned about the amount of people working on this, just him and another guy.

Isn't Mojang AB a huge studio with a pretty decent budget, by the time I'm writing this? Why the slow pace? I know he's still indie, by some extent, but still...

Because Notch, a long time ago, decided if he's going to do this, he's doing it his way. Whatever his reasons, I can't really fault him on it. At this point he's successful enough to be begrudged a slow pace for his work. And Mojang is pretty big, but it's still only in the Tens of employees, if I remember correctly, and they do have three other games they're working on at the moment as well as who knows how many side projects and merchandising opportunities... and who knows how many "technically" useless* people like Minecraft_Chick.

Notch does things his own way, and if that means laying out the skeleton of a project by himself before letting people come in, clean up, and fill in the details, then that's how he's going to do it. Honestly, I don't even connect Notch with the rest of Mojang at this point, except as some sort of vague figurehead. Notch is Notch. He makes game, by himself. Mojang is Mojang. They make games as a group.

*I say that with all respect given. She's not going to be making games, or doing much to be making money, but the PR she does tends to be pretty good, and she's apparently a pretty big help with the cons and I have much more respect for her since they started in on that Africa charity thing.

Yeah, Notch seems to prefer to tend to his "babies" himself until they're ready.  Begrudging him for not hiring more people rather than doing it all himself exactly the way he wants it is like begrudging Toady for not starting a kickstarter and hiring a dev team.  It's going to result in a better game in the end, I feel.  Plus, he's releasing it on the Minecraft model which means we get to play it as it gets more and more ready and give feedback, which is good.

I don't think it's going to get as big as Minecraft, mind you, but I don't think it'll be so complex that someone who likes building games or space sims will immediately hiss and drop it the second they load it up.

I can't let this thread die. The game will be too epic.
Is Notch still woring on the game? There hasn't been any news on the 0x10c site for a while.

In what way is this like Firefly? Also, subscription fee? Really?

Me too... but who can really blame him? The cost of running multiplayer for a game that massive could be a nightmare.

Yeah, it's not fair to expect a smaller studio like Mojang, who does not have a big publisher, pay and maintain the servers for this game without any kind of payment in return.  by the way, does anyone know how much the subscription fee is going to be?

OK, I have to reload the save.

One of the only good parts of it being subscription means that SOME of the griefers will be held back by the paywall.

I think it's going to be between £5-10, I swear notch said it was gonna be cheep.

Also I can't wait for the to come out I can put all my computer security courses and skills to use muahahahahahahaha

I'm going to fly around in the smallest ship and hack stuff and sell ship hacks, if the ships can be connected by a huge server wide network even better !, who needs lasers when I can shut down power and oxygen !

Someone should create a bay12 intranet anyway this is something currently out of my grasp but who knows we might have a networking god lurking on the forums

Instead of working by myself, I'd be extremely happy to join a crew in a multi-person vessel.  Especially because my programming skills are not so hot.  I think a Bay12 fleet would be just awesome.  If any of you feel like having an ally tag along to help you, I'd be happy to fill the position. :P

What language is going to be used for programming?  isn't it like assembly or something?  Anyone know where I could go to learn a little?

Yeah it's assembly.  Also I assume there would be popular OS's that most people would use, and if you can find an exploit in one (Or a few of them) then you are golden.  I just have to wonder how much connectivity there could be between ships.  I mean, unless you physically get into an enemy ship and get to their computer, how would you hack it?  Wireless?  Do they have that?

I believe Notch did say there would be a way to have a network between computers.
