Well he asked about ‼FUN‼ starts.  That was the earliest way I could think of to get ‼stuff‼.  Course he could just be using ‼ (or rather, !!) without knowing what it actually means.

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

What is the most....!!FUN!!.....way to start a fort?

Embark on a volcano and dig into the side, through the obsidian.

Also known as the skip the wind up bits and go straight to the boatmurdered-esque landscape.
What a better way to start a new fort than with old aspirations.

I found it fun to watch Hunter's Hunt, when I first started.  I liked watching the pathfinding and AI do its meticulous things.  Sounds were icying on the cake.  When I found I could add sounds, with Java and Soundsense, I was in hog heaven.

Now I just gotta figure out how to get them to hunt Ravens.  Because I am rapidly getting sick of DFhacking.. Slayrace BIRD_RAVEN, each time 6-8 Ravens come onto the map.

It sounds like you may as well mod the raws so ravens don't have wings.

If your friends have already a special humor, tell them about things like "How to Bacon like a pro" or "Dwarven Child Care" I had simply too much fun reading those threads :P

Anyone who says Dwarf Fortress sucks either can't get past the graphics or is too impatient to learn the (overly-complicated) controls.

Because aside from the horrible interface and the visual clusterfuck of ASCII with the vanilla game, DF is the best game ever.

Just let them keep their wings, but take away the [FLIER] token so they can't fly.

Alternatively give your hunters crossbows so they can actually shoot things instead of beating them to death with sticks.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I just convinced someone today to start playing DF!

I won them over with how open-ended it is. Build a towaer entirely of copper? Go right ahead. Magma moat? By all means. Torture room? Nothing stopping you. Endless waterfall? Go right ahead.

Carve a giant dwarves face into the side of a mountain and flow magma tears from its face? Possible.

Exploding puppies in the main dining hall? Possible

Arena where puppies/kittens are fed to war raptors? Possible

Sparta pits where prisoners are thrown to their deaths? Yep.

There's LITTERALLY infinite possibilities in a game where your creatures can somewhat think for themselves but will build whatever you desire.

Sure, Boatmurdered, Tholtig, Cacame.. Don't forget about other classics such as Chasing the elusive Mermaid, On the farming of Sea Serpents, Adventures on Monster Island, One Dwarf Against the World.. just off the top of my head, there's so many other great stories and projects.

If your friends are already into roguelikes and sandbox games it's gonna be certainly easier to encourage them to play. These stories should showcase them the depth of control players have over efficiency and detail, and the delightfully warped quirky humor unfolding in that :D

This but also your own stories: a got a few friends interested enough to try playing by just telling them of the ridiculous things that happened in my fort that week.

go on and on about how its too complicated for them , how they are not smart enough to play. with luck they will get so annoyed they will try and play to prove you wrong.

+1

That, and make 'em read Boatmurdered.  I was interested when I first saw the significant-other-at-the-time's roomie playing it, but it looked like someone had vomited ANSI all over the screen.  Then I read Boatmurdered.  Now I see "s as salad greens.  It's like entering The Matrix without the OCR.

If they play minecraft then you could tell them that Dwarf Fortress inspired that. Dwarf Fortress has also inspired a game called Maia which will be released sometime in January I think.

Not sure it inspired minecraft, but it did inspire towns and some other game that had gnomes instead. If you dont care about graphics and how hard a game can be then dwarf fortress is the game for you.
