72 as of now; four of the original dwarves are left. Kadol is still the expedition leader for some reason; I'd have thought we'd have a mayor by now.

What do you want your next dwarf to be named?

The leatherworker is acting strange now. He stood around, babbling about a great leather craft he wants to make. I've seen this happen before and didn't want him to hurt himself, so I ordered a leatherworker's workshop to be constructed for him. Then he started running around, shouting about silk cloth. I tried to explain to him that we were in the middle of nowhere and had more important things to worry about than silk, such as, I don't know, the undead. But he wouldn't relent. So finally I ordered the wall blocking off the caverns deconstructed and sent some dwarves in to gather cave spider webs to spin into silk. That plan went flawlessly, and I do believe we saved the leatherworker. Sadly, a number of naked mole dogs slipped into our fort and have been scaring the civilians. I am off to dispatch the bastards.

A shoe. The goddamn bastard made a freaking SHOE!!! Called it Saintblockade the Venerable Naughtiness. Its not even a pair of shoes; just a single shoe. He's caused reckless endangerment of civilians, what with the two dozen naked mole dogs running around the fort. I should Smite him for this...

Meanwhile, construction of the above-ground tower's first floor is progressing well. I have surrounded the entrance with a large courtyard. Later, we will pave the floor inside, and build a second floor, followed by a tower. I am planning on building the entire thing out of granite. It will be glorious. The first task is to set up ballistas on the second floor, then barracks in the courtyard.

The other dwarves have elected a civilian to be their mayor, one Lor Limulazin. That's fine by me; we've come to an understanding. He will manage the civilian aspects of the fort while I handle the defensive work. I have been appointed Captain of the Guard.

Not yet; I just got the announcement "you have attracted no new migrants this season". That actually makes sense; I've exported less than 5000 units. The dwarves didn't come last fall, due to the siege, and the fall before that I had nothing. Next time the Dwarves come, I should be able to give them a few tens of thousands worth of junk, and that should invite more new migrants.

************************

Events as they happened on the 1st of Galena, 224

For the last few weeks, it was common to hear a high-pitched squeeking and rapid, panicked footsteps as one of the naked mole dogs that sneaked into the forts ran by. Moments later, the clanging of metal against stone would follow, along with the baying of war hounds, as Sir Kadol Ezumadek the Paladin gave chase, accompanied by his hounds. Sooner or later, and usually sooner rather than later, one of the hounds would catch up to the mole dog and bite it. The mole dog would turn, fast as lightning, huge front teeth heading for the hound's neck. But before they could find their mark, the heavy warhammer wielded by Kadol would strike down and break the mole's skull, ending its attack prematurely. Soon, the food stockpiles were safe once more.

The great iron warhammer struck one last time, and the final naked mole dog was struck down. Whistling, Kadol headed back to the weapon stockpile to drop it off. During his trip down the Grand Staircase, he noticed something strange. He had ordered the entrance to the caverns sealed off, and the work was half done; but there was still a fairly large opening, and a pile of blocks on the ground. Kadol looked around, but none of the mason dwarves were there. Just then, a huge creature -- nearly twice his size, shaped vaguely like a hulking, deformed man and covered in shaggy green moss-like fur -- charged out of the caverns, roaring. It lashed out at Kadol with a pair of twisted tusks and tried to grab him with its heavy ape-like arms. Kadol reacted quickly; he raised his shield and caught the charging troll by surprise. The troll crashed into the much smaller dwarf's shield and they both tumbled over and over across the staircase landing, but thankfully not down it. They ended up with the huge troll on its back and the much smaller Paladin atop of him, weapons at the ready. The troll roared and tried to grab the Paladin with both arms, raising them towards his center, but Kadol was too fast. One arm was bashed aside with his shield, the other with his hammer. Then a quick hammerstrike to the troll's leg shattered bone and bruised fat. The troll roared in pain, and that was all the opportunity Kadol needed. He struck the troll on the head like a blacksmith strikes a hot iron, shattering the skull. But still, the troll struggled. At least, until the hammer came down a second time, silencing him for good.

****************************

It literally happened exactly like that. Very, very fast. I got a message: Urist McPeasant cancelled Store Item in Stockpile: Interrupted by Troll. "Oh shit!" thought I, "There's a troll in my fort?!" checked the unit list... No troll. Checked combat report. Yeah, there was a troll. For about five minutes.

Kadol is badass  :D I guess he is getting quite skilled in fighting, and also getting used to tragedy.

Finally, some good news! The fort is prospering under its new civilian leader, and work on defenses is progressing very well indeed. First, under Lor's new leadership, we have captured an entire herd of giraffes. We shall commence breeding and butchering them at once; the plan, I believe, is to use most of the males for meat, except for a breeding stock, and to keep the females. We shall have to construct a fenced-in grazing area for these valuable animals, and for our safety, as our skill at taming such beasts is not very great.

Meanwhile, a human caravan has arrived, along with a guildmaster from the nearest human city. This is a welcome opportunity to restock our supplies and offload some of our less useful junk. The caverns have been sealed off, finally, which should increase our overall safety. Mining and smelting is also prospering; we have many suits of armor, and even more arms. I shall commence the training of green troops as soon as the wall and moat are complete, which should also be done soon.

In other news, we've captured quite a few poisonous snakes out in the wild. While not very helpful against the undead, I am planning to build a pit to toss them in to stop goblins from attacking. Aside from dozens of goblin snatchers and kobold thieves, and the single wild troll whose head hangs above my bed now, we haven't seen any activity from the humanoids of the monstrous variety. That has me worried...

At this point, he is a Proficient hammerdwarf, Adequate fighter, and dabbling in most of the armor/wrestling/shield skills. He is getting used to tragedy, yes. His skills should shoot up once he's a fulltime Paladin and starts training recruits, though.

Spring has reached these lands once more, and it finds us prospering. We've nearly finished the first floor of the tower; all that is left is to carve fortifications, finish the last section of the moat, and build the barracks. As soon as the beds and weapons are in the barracks, I will begin teaching nine dwarves I have selected the art of war. Meanwhile, we've carved out a huge underground cavern in the rich soil layer, and brought in moss and mushrooms of types that prosper underground. We've placed our giraffe herd, along with a herd of tamed wild boars that we captured, in these pastures, along with our own herds. From the dwarven caravan we purchased some turkeys. If everything goes according to plan, we will never have to worry about food again!

We still haven't had any new migrants, unfortunately. Perhaps this spring will bring about a change of pace.

This spring is, indeed, a happy one! First, two dozen migrants arrived, bringing our total up to an even hundred! Just as I began worrying about how we'll feed all these mouths, I was informed that the giraffes have given birth to calves! And if I was still cynical, I was surprised and amazed to discover that among the migrants were not one, not two, not even five, but SEVEN Paladins! SEVEN! I was overjoyed, as were the nine civilians who found out they wouldn't be getting drafted. The barracks are almost complete as well; we will begin training within the week.

Further good news: I personally know one of the Paladins who arrived today! His name is Gavakis, and he's a very brave Paladin who likes to wade into battle with an axe. I'll be glad to have him by my side the next time the Legion shows up.

Another remarkable migrant is a dwarf named Ralph. He isn't a professional soldier, but he certainly knows how to handle a crossbow. He doesn't like Paladins very much, it appears; doesn't agree with our rules and codes of conduct. And yet, he came here, because his wife fell to the Legion, and he wishes to avenge her. I don't trust him, not yet, but I will allow him to prove himself. The next time we are attacked, he will wield his crossbow beside us.

*****************************

Same day, but in a hurried handwriting

It appears a giant minotaur has followed the new migrants here. It plans on attacking our fortress. Just when I thought this day was perfect, it got better... The troll head hanging in my bedroom could use a companion.

Things did not go as well as I had hoped, I am afraid. From the moment we caught sight of him, the minotaur charged straight for our fortress. We rang the bells to alert everyone to safety, and almost everyone made it in time. Almost. One wood cutter was too far from the fortress to make it in time. He arrived at the bridge just as the minotaur did. With no other choice, I ordered the bridge to be raised. I could have waited for him, but then the minotaur would have made it across as well, and we would all be doomed. The poor dwarf was trapped outside. I could only hope that us Paladins would be able to get our gear ready, lower the bridge, and attack the minotaur before he was killed. As I strapped on my breastplate, I noticed that one of the Paladins were missing. I finished donning my armor and we ran upstairs. To my horror, I saw the wood cutter dashing through the jungle... But the minotaur wasn't chasing him. Instead, he was wrestling with Sir Ingiz, another of the Paladins! We lowered the bridge and ran to Ingiz's aid as fast as we could, but we were too late. By the time we dispatched the minotaur, he was dead. Worse and worse, another of the Paladins was struck across the back and his spine was hurt. I pray that he will make a full recovery, but I know how unlikely it is.

The goblins finally attacked today. Two raiding parties, one squad carrying pikes and one carrying axes, charged at us out of the jungle. Luckily, both my Paladins and the marksdwarf squad whose leadership I gave to Ralph on a trial balance were in the main courtyard, practicing. While Ralph's dwarves peppered the goblins with bolts, we charged them and slew them where they stood. Especially impressive was Gavakis, who delivered many mighty blows with his axe. While none of the killing strikes was his, he slashed every single one of the goblins before it died. Truly an impressive feat. None of the marksdwarves was wounded, nor any of the Paladins. Unfortunately, one recruit was struck down by an angry pikegoblin, and during the battle a goblin snatched managed to kill a baby he was trying to kidnap. Still, this is an improvement over the last time we were attacked.

There is evil afoot in this fortress, and I am going to find it and end its prowl. Zulban, a planter who spent most of her days working in the fields until Ralph picked her for his marksdwarf squad, found her husband Reg dead in his bed, drained of all blood. She brought the matter to me right away, and was right to do so, for I quite clearly recognized the signs: There is a vampire among us. Sir Sazir, a fellow Paladin and the one who struck down the minotaur, claims that she saw Libash, one of Duthnur's assistants, sneak into Reg's bedroom. I will have to launch a full investigation, of course, but my gut tells me that I should believe Sir Sazir, as she is a Paladin, much like myself. Of course, that is exactly what a vampire would want me to think, therefore I must dig deeper.

To Be Dwarfed:
Peregar, Hammerer or Sheriff Cleric, faithful worshipper of some deity

I suggest recruiting three full squads:
10x Archers - they are surprisingly effective against zombies as long as they have bolts, and quite useful at covering melee soldiers.
5x Hammers, 5x Maces - fortress guards and anti-zombie force.
3x Axes, 3x Swords, 4x Spears - melee squad, good against alive invaders.
All melee soldiers should be good armored as soon as posssible.

Citizens that should NOT be recruited:
 - High-skilled weapon- and armorsmiths
 - Medics
 - Manager
Others can be drafted according to their physical state.
Miners form 'last chance' squad that is called to arms when all regular army is dead.

Also, do you consider danger room training?

UPD: Oh, a vampire!
