From the Journal of Kadol Ezumadek, Dwarven Paladin
19th of Timber, 223

Oh, woe is us! The Legion has arrived, nearly fifty undead led by a Necromancer named Xugoth Dothansothbod. I do not know how they found out where we were, but I suspect treachery from the elves. We rang the alarm bells and the civilians who were caught outside, and thankfully they all made it inside, along with some of our livestock. Most of the animals, unfortunately, were caught outside and will probably be slain, only to be added to the mad Xugoth's army. The only animal who looks like he has a chance is the giant mantis we bought from the elves; already, he has cleaved through half a dozen zombies. But I fear even he will eventually fall.

I rushed for the door, along with Piranha and Doren, the female Paladin speardwarf. They made it out first, and began fighting. To my horror, they were torn apart in seconds, as our armor wasn't ready yet. Much as I longed to rush out and help them, I knew that if I did, the fortress would be doomed. I stood at the door for a moment, longing to charge; but then I fell back. I have ordered the dwarves to forge armor and a shield for me. As soon as that is ready, I will charge straight at the Necromancer. If I strike him down, perhaps the walking dead will crumble.

Finally, some happy news in these dark times. From the roof of our walled enclave, we can see that the Necromancer, along with about a quarter of the Legion, has been caught in one of our traps! As soon as my armor is complete, I will go clean up the rest of the undead, and then execute the bastard as the law demands.

BP, this is a community fort, not a succession fort. Sorry. But I can Dwarf you. Is a female OK? I could make you the in-game overseer.

Thats fine, was a bit confused about the community vs succession game part (Can you tell me the difference then?).

I just have a hatred of farmers, fishers, and animal trading dwarfs in my current forts (they cause SO much trouble and take a lot of micromanagement, or just DIE in the case of fishers, even when i turn off their fishing labor). Anything else is good

I must make a note to buy some cats from traders at the next opportunity and see if I can chain up a breeding pair someplace clean. Having kittens wandering the hallways will be a good way of identifying patches of paralytic poison that still need to be taken care of.

Events as they happened on the 19th of Moonstone, 223

Deep in the bowels of the earth, Kadol Ezumadek strapped on his armor. Fresh from the forges, it was still warm; had he not been wearing leather underneath, he would no doubt have been scalded. As it was, the warm armor made him sweat like a pig, but discomfort was never something that could slow down a Paladin. In his right hand, he tightly grasped his iron warhammer. In his left, a masterfully crafted shield. Behind him came a dozen barking war hounds. Kadol smiled, a grim and terrifying smile. The time has come to take revenge.

An hour later, the dwarf climbed out of the fortress and into the stone bunker that has so far kept out the undead. "Well, boys, may Esrel guide your bites!" he called out to his hounds. Then he kicked open the stone door and charged out into the jungle where the shambling dead were moaning.

Out of the thick and humid underbrush came the rotting body of a goblin, animated by dark magic. Its hands and teeth were bloody with yak blood. Kadol grinned. "Back to the earth with ye, ye foul abomination!" he yelled as he swung his hammer at the goblin's head, knocking it off his shoulder. Then, panting with adrenalin, he charged off deeper into the jungle. Out of the bushes came a human corpse, who reached out and grabbed the dwarven Paladin by his hammer arm. The dwarf snarled with anger. "Get your rotten hands off of me!" he yelled as he swung his shield around, catching the zombie in the temple and knocking it to the ground, destroyed. Another human corpse shamble out of the bushes. It swung at the Paladin with its hand, tearing apart his hand. Kadol dropped his hammer, snarled, and kicked the corpse's head clear off its shoulders. As he picked up his hammer again, the dogs caught up with him, having just slain another group of corpses. He grinned and charged ahead, eager for more slaughter.

Finally, having killed a number of zombies, Kadol dragged himself (for his right leg was cut open) back into the fortress. Behind him came a large number of elven zombies, but Kadol was simply too wounded to fight them. He'd rest for a while, let Duthnur sew his foot back up, and then return to battle.

In the beautiful dining room set up deep underground in Goldensculpt stood a bloody bed. The dining room, unfortunately, was the only place to set up a field hospital on such short notice. "Damn it, be careful!" shouted Kadol as Duthnur stuck his needle in his leg. "Hold still!" grunted Duthnur. "I'll fix you up, just hold still!". Kadol gripped his bloody hammer, which he still hasn't let go off since the battle, as Duthnur fixed him up. Finally, the work was done. Kadol stood up, winced, and then took another step. He stuck his foot back in his armored boot. "Thanks. Blessings of Esrel be upon you!" he said. "Now, time to depart". Torkild and Rendell, two of the other founders, gasped. "You can't go back out there!" said one. "You're still injured! You'll be killed!". Kadol just shook his head. "Perhaps. But it is my duty. I'm not gonna live forever!". The other two dwarves shared a glance. "Alright then. But we're coming with you!"

"No! It's far too dangerous! And you have no combat training!"

Torkild raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me? Do you know how many crossbows I build? Who do you think tests them all?" Rendell, too, begged to differ: "I know how to mine through solid rock. Can mining through zombie skulls be that much harder?"

Kadol sighed. He didn't want to put his friends in danger, but he was impressed by their bravery. "Alright then. Lets go and kill some undead!" Together, the three dwarves strapped on their armor and headed up to the surface.

Damn, dead already. Alright! Redwarf me as a marksdwarf that can shoot from behind walls. Name him Ralph. Hes a drunk even by dwarven standards and doesn't like the paladins, but hates the undead more than anything else since they killed his wife! Also cynical.

Kadol Ezumadek and and Torkild stood back to back, both in heavy armor. Around them stood a dozen war hounds, eager to fight. At first nothing seemed to happen. Torkild relaxed, lowering her crossbow. "Are the zombies still here?" she asked, "They may have left!". Kadol shook his head. "I doubt it. Without their creator commanding them, they'll simply wander around the immediate area, killing everything they find". Just then, a moan came from the jungle to the left. Kadol raised his hammer and began walking towards the sound. "Boy, they sure do sound scary!" said Torkild. Just then, a zombie charged out of the jungle to the right, straight at Torkild. It bit her on the arm and latched on firmly. Torkild screamed in horror and pain, hitting the zombie with her crossbow over and over again, but it barely seemed to notice. Meanwhile, an elven zombie charged Kadol. "Damn it!" he cursed, whacking its head clear off of its shoulders. Then he turned around and rushed to Torkild's aid. With a grunt, he swung the hammer and broke the zombie's back. But it was too late for Torkild; she was on the floor, clutching her bleeding arm. "Get yourself inside!" he called out. "I'll cover you!". Torkild nodded, and began crawling into the fort. Once Torkild was inside the fort proper, some other dwarves came to help her to the makeshift hospital. Kadol was left alone at the entrance to the fort as the moans of many zombies came from the jungle once more. "Come on, Rendell... Where are you?" he muttered as he clutched his hammer.

Suddenly, the hounds started barking and rushed off into the bushes. Kadol followed, and found them biting and wrestling with a goblin zombie. A pair of hammerstrikes put it down. Finally, Rendell arrived, carrying a pick. For some reason, he wasn't wearing armor. "What the hell are you doing, Rendell?!" shouted Kadol. "Where is your armor?!" "It was just slowing me down, Captain!" he called out with a wink. That's when three zombies, a goblin, a human, and an elf, burst out of the trees to attack. "DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!" shouted Kadol as he rushed towards Rendell, but he was too late; the zombies ripped him apart with their bare hands. Under this new wave, Kadol was forced to fall back once again. "Damn you, zombies! Damn you!" He struck another zombie, dispatching it, as he and his hounds fell back through the door. He barricaded it, then fell to the floor, sobbing. So many good dwarves, dead... He stood up again, determination in his eyes. No more. No more. If the Mountainhome wasn't going to send him Paladins, he'd train them himself.

From the Journal of Kadol Ezumadek, Dwarven Paladin
10th of Opal, 223

The siege wears on, and many good dwarves are dead. But in the darkness, a few good things happened. A dwarf named Peregar told me that he was inspired by my heroism and decided to do his duty as a dwarf. Knowing how much I loathed my task of Hammerer, for I have no stomach for execution, he volunteered to take my place. He is a good, loyal dwarf; I eagerly agreed. I also got to know the Overseer better, a dwarven woman. She's loyal and hardworking enough, if a bit odd; she wants us to call her bp920091. Odd, I suppose, but harmless enough.

Durthnur's Personal Log

Entry 1

Arrived at Goldensculpt. Nice place, jungle not evil nor too savage. Outpost small but growing, new hope for dwarfkind. Leader is paladin, named Kadol. Passionate, lawful, suitable leader for border fortress. Gave fine quarters, accepted me into Order, promoted me to Chief Medical Dwarf. Proud to be here.

Entry 2

Undead coming. Must not panic. Deler the Cave of Copper protects us, Deler the Cave of Copper protects us, Deler the Cave of Copper protects us, Deler the Cave of Copper protects us, Deler the Cave of Copper protects us...
Lost most of pasture to zombies. Piranha, Doren torn apart. Kadol ordering armor production, better chances that way. Necromancer caught in trap. Chance to mop up rest of corpses... if there is no other necromancer nearby.

The next day, three dwarves stood before the entrance to the fort. Sir Kadol the Paladin, wielding his heavy warhammer and shield; Torkild the Marksdawrf, in heavy armor as well and carrying a crossbow; and Obok the Miner, one of the fortress's greatest miners. They stood before the fort, sweating under the hot tropical sun. Torkild, whose arm turned out to be broken, still insisted on joining the battle. She grunted in pain, but stood her ground. A rustling came from the underbrush ahead. Together, the group charged, and easily dispatched one of the few remaining zombies. Torkild grinned. "That wasn't so bad!" she said, smiling despite of the pain. That's when a series of moans came from the other side of the fort. The dwarves rushed around and found themselves staring down the rest of the zombies: A few elves, some goblins, and a human, stumbling through the underbrush. Sir Kadol smiled grimly. "FOR DUTY!" he screamed as he charged ahead. The other dwarves followed, charging into battle. Obok's pick flew through the air, ripping limbs off of the undead. Kadol's hammer strikes rained down upon the dead, breaking limbs, backs, and heads. Torkild's bolts flew through the air, then ran out; rather than fleeing, Torkild charged ahead, using her crossbow like a club. Zombie after zombie fell before this combined assault, Kadol and Obok sustaining only minor injuries. Torkild wasn't so lucky. A goblin zombie bit her finger, ripping it off and moaning. Torkild fell to the ground, clutching the stump and gasping in pain. The zombies swarmed in, kicking and punching. By the time the others cleared them off of her, Torkild was no more than a mangled pile of flesh. Moments later, Kadol ran by, swinging his hammer. The undead goblin attacker was thrown into the air, flipping over and crashing into a tree. Kadol knelt down, holding Torkild in his arms. "DAMN IT!" he shouted in anger. Then he stood, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "ENOUGH!" he shouted. "There can't be many more of them. Come on, Obok; we're going after them!" Together, the two dwarves rushed into the jungle and away from the fort.

6th of Obsidian, 223

It's over. Finally, its over. The last undead abomination fell to my hammer today. My hand is shaking as I write this. We lost seven dwarves to that cursed Necromancer. Seven good dwarves. But we struck them as well. Thirteen zombies are caught in our traps, along with the necromancer himself. Thirty three zombies have been struck down, by myself and others. I killed ten of the bastards personally, and aside from minor cuts which have already healed I am completely uninjured. Physically, at least; mentally, I am scarred. I've seen my best friends get ripped apart by my the dead. But that only serves to motivate me. The next time we are attacked, we will be ready. I will ensure that not a single dwarf falls needlessly, or I will die trying.

In other good news, the siege engineer was just inspired by the Divines to create a mechanism. On it is an image of a human taming jaguars and an image of the lead door that was created in this fort.

BLAST it, that damned fool! We've had murder in the fort. It appears that the strain of fighting the dead proved too much for the miner Odok, who murdered the legendary carpenter Kubuk. He claims that it was an accident; he admits to assaulting Kubuk, but claims he didn't mean to kill him. Because of Odok's standing as a war hero and the understandable strain of recent events, I didn't order him to be hammered; instead, I sentenced him to 201 days in jail. Still, if he ever puts a single toe out of line again, I will have him prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

9th of Granite, 224

Odok resisted arrest. I tried to take him peacefully, but he fell and hit his head. He died. I do not regret it; he honestly deserved death.

In other news, dozens of kobold thieves have been spotted around the outside of the fort. It appears that they've been arriving during the siege and biding their time.

Bad news. It seems that Peregar was a lover of one of the dwarves who was killed. He spent the last few months barely controlling himself, but that's over now; he's gone mad. He's running around babbling and throwing off his clothes. I guess I need to be the hammerer again.

A few days later

In a small chamber just bellow the surface sat a tall, dark-haired man. He brushed a large spider off of his arm and sighed. A few short weeks ago, he still worked tirelessly in his master's tower, animating the dead and scheming of a way to take control of his tower. Eventually, he got the simple idea to just leave and conquer a new fort from which to work. The captured elves from the caravan that passed by a few months ago gave him the perfect opportunity; before they were killed and reanimated, they revealed (under torture, of course) the location of a nearby dwarven fortress. So one dark and stormy night, the necromancer apprentice left his master's dark tower with a horde of the dead and set upon this dwarven keep. Unfortunately, the dwarves fought back bravely, and the apprentice's own carelessness got him stuck in a cage. He looked around. Sitting near his cage were a dozen or so other cages, each one containing one of his prized undead soldiers. All that remained of his once-great army. His cage, he noticed, was different than the others. Most of the cages simply sat on the ground; his was on a small pedestal, and some sort of mechanism was attached to the door. As he pondered the mechanism, the door suddenly opened of its own accord with a soft click. The necromancer stood up cautiously. The cage must have malfunctioned! And now he was free; all he had to do was set his minions loose, open the door (which, he had seen when the dwarves came by to drop off more of his minions' cages, was unlocked), fight his way to the dwarven tombs or the butcher's stock, and animate the dead from within. And there was nothing they could do to stop him! He cackled evilly as he set to work on the first cage. That's when he heard a loud thump. He whirled around to see a dwarf in heavy metal armor carrying a shield and hammer. The necromancer crouched into a defensive position, but the dwarf did not attack. Instead, he drew a copper blade and tossed it at the ground before the necromancer.

"It would be dishonorable to slay an unarmed opponent. Pick up your blade, scum, and face your death with dignity!" the dwarf boomed. He had a much deeper voice than the apprentice expected from one so short. He hesitated; he wasn't particularly skilled with a blade, and this dwarf clearly knew what he was doing. And yet... He didn't seem to have much of a choice. He smiled at the dwarf and bent down to pick up the sword. Then, with a swift motion, he picked up a handful of sand (Didn't dwarves usually live in rock tunnels?, he wondered) and tossed it at the dwarf's face. The dwarf reacted quickly, raising his shield to prevent the sand from blinding him. But the distraction was enough for the apprentice; he quickly mumbled an incantation, pointing at the dwarf, and a dark beam of energy sprung from his finger to strike the dwarf. "Fool! The grace of my god protects me from your foul magic!" shouted the dwarf as he charged his opponent. The apprentice slashed with his sword, a desperate last attempt at salvation, but the dwarf hit his swordarm with his shield so hard that his wrist shattered and the blade flew, spinning, across the room. The necromancer was vaguely aware of loosing control of one of his minions as the spinning blade killed one of the caged zombies as the hammer came down upon his head, and then the world went black.
