[Development] A new webbased 3D visualizer
« on: November 30, 2012, 03:37:03 am »

Hi everyone,

I've started up quite an ambitious project: I'm building a 3D visualizer that runs in your browser using WebGL. Progress is steady and the project has passed the proof-of-concept stage, so I'm ready to further flesh out the engine.

I have asked for some forts to test with (which I received, thank you!) and made quite a lot of progress since then. People asked for screenshots so here are a few of my latest fort, Stokedgirder.

A view of the first set of caverns below the surface

Overview of the fort

We had a little problem involving a leaking river. I tried to direct the water into the caverns below, but I failed, as this image shows (the shaft in the back did solve the problem, though 70-something dwarfs were taken by the flood)

A look from inside (which really is the outside) of the fort

Some tiles show up as holes simply because I only barely started fleshing out the individual objects and tiles. It's likely that nothing you see here will make it into the final product, but it does show what's happening.

The project still needs a name, so if you have suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em!

Giant Cave Spider (GCS), since it's web-based.

Looks good! I also approve of "DF GCS", since it could also give it double meaning along the lines of:

"DF Geographic Conjuring Software" as well as Giant Cave Spider.

Yes. Yes.

This looks exciting, I'll be monitoring this project for sure.

Finished: Weatherwires, the Last Mountainhome. A tragic mix of Children of Men, City of Ember, and, uh, magma.
Stymied: Correspondence from Syrupurns, a prematurely ended narrative, told through annual updates.
In Progress: Roomcarnage, a fortress clinging to life beneath a haunted glacier.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I would say this, but it's already been said.

I'd also like a Stonesense-esque feature for viewing specific layers, by "hiding" the ones above.

I like MAGMA

also do you need to dig to the cavern layer for it to show up in the visualizer? Or is it there by default?

I prefer GCS over magma, myself.

Either way, much more original name than stonesense, by far.

Should this be in General Discussion or modding section?

But anyway, even though it work's,that's a pretty basic mapper, maybe in the future you can get some designers to actually improve it?
