Newbie's Gambit
« on: November 29, 2012, 03:49:40 pm »

Welcome to the histories of the Omeganaut Clan

So, I'm new to the game, and I keep making new fortresses to tweak by floor designs (also, I'm mostly interested in fortress mode).  But I've come to realize that Losing is Fun, and that I need to let myself lose instead of rebuilt that entrance five different ways.  So, to keep myself honest, and to get some feedback from community members, I will be posting my story up here.  I am open to dwarfing requests, name suggestions, project suggestions, and embark suggestions.

Note: I don't have any knowledge of posting screenshots, so if the community wants screenies, I would love to have some advice on that.  Also, I can't promise to be consistent due to RL, but I will try to update at least once per week.  When I have more time, i will post more often.  Also, if there are other new players with imput, I would be happy to learn this game along with you.

Just a heads up, the Windows 7 version I use (Professional) comes with a Screen Capture utility that lets you select a window, so if you use the same W7 version I use you don't even need to cut the image. Also, I recommend you use Img.ie, it's simple and fast.

You didn't hear it from me, but if you 'quote' a post that has some code you do not know how to use correctly, it shows you the nitty gritty.  For instance if you quote a post with colors, text size differences, images, links, or any other fun things you can see the bbcode.

Thank you for the help.  I shall figure it out once I start up.  Any one have any suggestions for Embark details?  Like location, or animals to bring, or such?

Screen Shot Tutorial 101

Alt-PrtSc (Print Screen) - will capture the window you are currently viewing.
Open Microsoft Paint program.
Ctrl-P - this will past your screen capture into the program, which you can now crop/edit and save.
Now find a website that will do free photo storage and sharing. (A full list) Upload your photo(s) and copy the photos web link.
Then when you post in the forum click the 'Insert Image' button (above the happy face smiley) and past the link to the photo between the open and close code.

I'm going to embark tomorrow night, so if you want input on names or geographic features, post in the next 24 hours, or forever hold your peace.  I will begin the logbook then, thank you for your patience.

Okay, so I’m embarking then, and I selected this spot here because it promises some waterfalls, water, and good minerals.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
AHEM…
Today I am here to tell you the tale of the first great Omeganaut clan business venture.  It became known as Oceanolives, although I can’t tell you why, as that mystery is indeed lost to the depths of insanity.  They founded it far from home, although not from other dwarves.  The first Omega settled their wagon next to a stream, where it was joined by another stream.  Still nothing to do with olives or oceans.  He brought along a catering expert, in order to ensure he had the finest food, a hunter and carpenter, which he called Pisskop , a craftsman he referred to as Human Resources, which was an odd thing to call a good dwarf, and a sales associate, to which he promised great career opportunities without the intention of fulfilling them.  To fill up his team, he “recruited” two miner he found drunk in a tavern on his way out the gate.
In short, this ragtag group of adventurers (willing or not) began to explore this new place.  The first thing they noticed was a large amount of Carp in the stream.  Thus, fishing was decided to be impractical for fear of being dragged underwater to drown.  Pisskop however, had some significant success hunting, bagging two impalas and an elephant.  The miners, following an exploratory shaft, discovered a cavern.  Omega, upon hearing the news, was heard to shout “Perfect!  Give me a shout with the Trog Flambe is ready!” A farm, stockpile, dining room, dormitory and workshops were also excavated.  Chalk was plentiful, but there were no signs of coal underground, an obvious hindrance of future plans for steel industry.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The arrival of summer heralded a new strangeness from Omega.  He announced the construction of a moat.  Of water no less.  The other dwarves thought this odd, but none had the courage to tell him so, and thus they dug.  Unfortunately, the miners failed to use proper techniques, and caused a few unexpected collapses, but avoided any lasting damage.  Just as the dust was clearing, two new dwarves walked in.  According to them, their evil parents had forced them to separate, so they eloped.  The constant bickering however, was unexpected, and when they saw dust on the horizon, they knew it had to be fellow dwarves.  Doren was a Miner with a bit of experience, and even better had brought his own iron pick, so he was quickly sent to teach the pressganged pair a lesson.  Meanwhile, Zom turned out to be a master shearer, and came with a pair of baby llamas.  She was sent to collect plants from the surface, and to assist the catering department.
Kobold thieves would occasionally appear, but for some reason they enjoyed spending time in the exploratory shafts rather than actually attempt to take anything valuable.  Speaking of exploratory shafts, the only ore we have found so far is Sphalerite.  Omega was quoted as saying “I will mine all the tin off this tinny-tin-tin”, and was bereft of eye contact for several days.  And thus the summer came and went.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, nothing exciting so far.  Advice is certainly welcome, as is any other comments.  Trolls may be thrown in cages however.

I don't know if you have already been using it, but Dwarf Therapist is awesome.
I hated this game after waves of 30+ immigrants started coming in until I started using it.

I'd like a Mechanic named Bomanz.

Currently, my chief medical dwarf is Omega, as I just give him all the admin positions so I can assign him the dining hall as work space.  And I have the lazy newb pack, and I do use Therapist.  I just found out the custom professions, and am working those out to where I like them.  So far only two migrants.
