Any games where you learn about Ancient Foriegn Cultures?
« on: November 28, 2012, 07:43:59 pm »

I am watching a letsplay of a chinese game made in china! and honestly it is so drenched in Chinese culture, even if it is a fictional setting, that it kinda is leaving me with a big lust for games that are so setting driven that you feel like you just learned an entirely different culture.

For example Kings of Dragon Pass, if you understand that magic isn't real, is an interesting setting that you explore.

Total war games.
Considering that the unit descriptions usually have a description of their role, history in war, and importance, its pretty informative.

The Assassin's Creed games are good for this. There's a huge encyclopedia of background info they provide on many characters and events.

Obviously you just have to take into account that none of the things actually happened because of you.

I used to LOVE the old Koei company games, like Nobunga's Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms series - the games were nothing super-duper special, but it did get me to read a bunch more about the period, and you can actually play as Cao Cao!   Although for challenge I started with lesser guys with still-decent stats, there was some 1 province guy on the coast I remember using over and over in the one in the series I was playing a lot (probably ROTK III or IV).

Read a book. There are many catering to different levels of interest. What you learn from games is mostly shallow pop-culture trash.

Especially the total wars series. Almost every "quote" in the loading screen is made-up, no joke, and the rest of the historical background is none too accurate either.

Sadly, yeah. The guys at Creative Assembly aren't history professors.

Rome: Total Realism mod is rather nice though, since they DID have history professors as part of the dev team. I love that you can play as one of the Indo-Greek Bactrian kings, using modified hoplite tactics plus Asian elephants and Central Asian horse archers.

No, but they do tend to hire multiple experts for whichever game they are working on, as well as acquiring source texts for the design phases.
For the most part the Total War games reflect the situation of the time they are set, although concessions are made for gameplay reasons (and in some cases ratings reasons).

Legend of Wulin Heroes... Its on the Letsplayarchive and it is one of the few games that after just seeing a few screens of it I was like "Dang I want to play it. Look it even has Tea as a skill". Knowing that no I will never get to actually play it since it is Chinese.

It is more because they actively go for game over historical accuracy. You will sometimes, if you look, find very historical tidbits just hiding in the game without any fanfare. Yet they will often just make things up (For example they added Robin Hood to the games once)
