Barkley 2 TMROTNNEFN7ROCTOGOTMC2OTHBS on Kickstarter
« on: November 28, 2012, 06:58:41 pm »

Tales of Games have happily launched the Kickstarter for their sequel to the beloved indie RPG Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden. This time around it's a really sharp looking action-RPG with mouse aiming action controls and a bit of a Cyberpunk flare. There are words. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/talesofgames/barkley-2-an-rpg-sequel-to-barkley-shut-up-and-jam

Quote
Barkley 2 is an open world action roleplaying game with heavy emphasis on exploration, choice, character development and discovery. It combines the focus on strong characters and narrative of Eastern RPGs with the non-linearity and openness of Western RPGs, drawing on the best ideas from titles like Realms of Arkania, Fallout, Dark Souls, Romancing SaGa, Dark Sun, Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. It is a game that combines core roleplaying ideas like character creation and development, quests and choices and consequences with fast-paced, action oriented combat (think Soldat meets Zelda) and Tales of Game's unique and erotic sense of humor. In short: this ain't your grandpa's rollenspiel.

Some of the things Barkley 2 features:

Things Change Over Time - People, places and quests change over time; the things you experience might be completely different from what your friends experience because you did them at different times. The official Big Idea behind Barkley 2 is that everyone will have a different game - things changing over time is the backbone of this idea.

Large, Open World - The Necron 7 is a large, open environment with dozens of areas to explore. There are things to find in every corner and secrets everywhere - this is a game all about exploration.

Edutainment

Fast-paced Action RPG Combat - Barkley 2 has mouse-aimed shooting gameplay that takes inspiration from action games like Crimsonland and Soldat, but also RPGs like Dark Souls and Gothic. Stats, classes and an incredibly deep character creation system give you complete control over your character; we want to make Barkley 2 a game that is not only funny, but fun to play.

Randomized Gun's System - Gun's are randomized through a complex system similar to Diablo's or Borderland's, offering millions of possibilities. Shotgun's that shoot ooze, machine gun rocket launchers and gravity rifles are just the tip of the iceberg of our gun's system. Even more than this, you can fuse gun's together in a system similar to demon fusing from the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series. The weapon combinations are nearly unlimited.

DwarfNET - Connect with fellow dwarfs and dwarf enthusiasts on the in-game DwarfNET message board. Jack your cranial USB into the data matrix and search for clues or chat with tech-savvy dwarfs about vidcons, layups and the latest jock news through the amazing power of bio-cybernetic technology.

...and more?

It actually looks genuinely fun to play and I love ToG's sense of humor so I'm already on board for the $10. There's some pretty cool rewards in higher tiers including the already sold $1000 where the studio lets you do their professional game press interviews while impersonating a developer. And now, pictures!

What sort of made the game odd is it actually kinda followed a good story structure. To the point where I even wondered if they rewritten someone elses script (and they may still have).

But I am not sure if they really should try to have lightning strike twice.

Not that the original game was all good... there were a few sections that just sort of made me think the creator had mental problems (and they may very well have)

There were also some sections that were good enough to be in a professional game that really stand out.

This brings up some rather polarized feelings. I played and thoroughly enjoyed Barkley, and I know these people are entirely capable of making a quality game in terms of engaging game mechanics combined with over the top humor while maintaining a straight face as it tries to deliver the "serious business" attitude. It's that same grasp of humor that makes it difficult to take it seriously when it comes to the prospect of real money; I think it would be so much easier to buy into if it were some comedian with a face instead of these relatively anonymous people on the internet. I'm sure this isn't the first kickstarter project to be in such a situation, but it's definitely the first one I've seen that I would actually care about.

It looks super awesome from the video. I'm very tempted. Will play the first game and Make My Decision.

I enjoyed every single moment of the original Barkley so I'm totally down for this. My only fear is that it won't have the "this game is a piece of shit" vibe that the first one had that made everything about it better.

I loved the original more than society says I should, so I never hesitated about throwing in for the sequel- even if it's a piece of crap, it's my way of saying "thanks for the first game."

After much deliberation, I kicked in $100 for the Cyberdwarf body pillow.

Horrendously burned in a fire, Cyberdwarf's life was saved only after having basketballs grafted over his skin. He's lonely and looking for love, but be careful - he bites!

Spoiler: You know you want one (click to show/hide)

I really, really want one. If I somehow get the money to get one I will increase my pledge without hesitation. My applebottom is ready.

If I had $1000 and the timing I would have been all over the 'Pose as us in official interviews with games media' tier in a second.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the fallout from that one. Given that it's Tales of Games, it might be entirely indistinguishable from an interview they would have normally given.

Also, just thought I'd mention that they've met their goal, so this game is definitely going to happen. No word yet on stretch goals.

Oh sweet Cuchulainn, yes! This is the best news I've heard all year! Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden still is one of my favorite vidcons, and I've been waiting for a new Tales of Game's game for quite a while. Excitement!

Is there any loophole to donate money to this grand project if you don't have a credit card? I must have all of Chef Boyardee's sweet sweet tunes. The remix of johnathan taylor thomas in the trailer is too good...

Edit: I've read the SA posts a bit, and they said they'll put up a Paypal link soon. All is well!

Stretch goals!

Quote
We've got some really cool stretch goals to get more content into the game. We've separated our goals into two categories: mini goals, which add small, fun things to the game, and major goals, which add ambitious content and significantly add to the experience. We're excited about all of our stretch goals, we hope you are too, and we may have more to come!

$50,000 - MAJOR GOAL - Barkley 2 Mac Port - If we reach $50,000, Leon Arnott, the cool dude responsible for the Barkley 1 Mac port, will be able to port Barkley 2 to the Mac as well. As of writing this update, we're less than $1,000 away so let's make this happen! If we do hit our goal, we will give you the option of selecting whether you want a Mac or PC digital download when the game is released.

$50,069 - MINI GOAL - Legendary Blue Duergar Quest Translated to English for THE VERY FIRST TIME! - If we reach $50,069, just $69 more than our Mac port goal, Tales of Game's vows on our bushido honor as edutainers that we will translate the legendary Blue Duergar Quest from its original Japanese. Barkley 2's Blue Duergar Quest was voted the greatest RPG quest ever by trillions of Japanese gamers and rocked the mystical land of Nippon to its very core. Tales of Game's will make this quest available in English for the first time ever and bring it to gaijins across the globe.

$55,000 - MINI GOAL - Mysterious Vigilante Drain Clean Pudgey Prowls the Sewers of Tir na nOg - I have no idea what this means, but Frankie says it will be in the game if we make $55,000. Frankie claims that it will cost us exactly $55,000 to put Drain Clean Pudgey in the Barkley 2 and that we cannot possibly do it with a dollar less. Let's make Frankie's undying dream of Drain Clean Pudgey come true.

$60,000 - MAJOR GOAL - In-Game Movie Theater - If we reach $60,000, we will be able to have an in-game movie theater that plays films in the vein of Eric "cboyardee" Shumaker's ridiculous Youtube videos like Dilbert 3, The Football Kid and Oldest Trick in the Book. It will also give us the money we need to hire actors for incredible live action cutscene videos. Our good pal, the indomitable Youtube wizard Docfuture1, will also be contributing! Mama mia!

$62,000 - MINI GOAL - Barkley 1 Save Import System - At $62,000 we'll be able to produce a system that allows you to import your saves from Barkley 1. The imported saves will let you bring over data, items, character choices and ~L.I.B.R.A.R.Y. C.A.R.D.S.~ from the original Barkley and will have ripples throughout Barkley 2!

$65,000 - MINI GOAL - Barkley 2 Al Bhed Translation - At $65,000, we will be able to give gamers one of the most requested return features from the original Barkley - an Al Bhed translation. We at Tales of Game's feel that the Al Bhed community is too often overlooked by big game publishers. It's time to take a stand for what we believe in and show big developers that we demand Al Bhed in our games. The translation will be laborious and painstaking, but it will be worth it.

$67,500 - MINI GOAL - Hidden Scenarios - There are upwards of 4 legendary names that have been imbued with miraculous power since the dawn of time. Their careless utterance has been the root cause of history's most devastating calamities. If this goal is met, Tales of Game's will finally have the means to (safely) harness these occult forces and integrate these sources of power into our game as 4 alternate scenarios and game modes, available to whoever enters these names at character creation. Nude mode is a distinct possibility.

$70,000 - MAJOR GOAL - Nightmare City, a huge city with tons of new content - Right now, our plan is to only have a single large hub city, Tir na Nog. Tir na Nog has dozens of characters, quests, events and things to do and is by far the largest area in the game. If we reach $70,000, we'll be able to make Nightmare City, a city that's as large as Tir na Nog and features as much or even more content. Nightmare City will feature a massive library, a haven for weary ballers, dozens of NPCs, tons of new quests and events and more content that would not otherwise make it into the game.

$73,000 - MINOR GOAL - We will wear pants during office hours - Apparently it's considered "hygienic" and "socially appropriate" to wear pants at work. Whatever, we'll make an effort to wear pants while we're working, but ONLY WHEN WE'RE ON THE CLOCK.

More to come? - We are still researching the viability of ports to Linux, iOS, Android, consoles and other operating systems. We will let you know if there are any developments!

The save import from Barkley 1 sounds way cool. Most of this sounds like nonsense, but given their track record I'm sure it will be entertaining nonsense. Also, one of the new reward tiers lets you create posts for the in-game DwarfNET forums. There's only 2 left, and it's 420 dollars, but if I had the cash I'd make a post all about Dwarf Fortress in the post-cyberpocalypse.

They linked to a few interviews as well. That last one is pretty good.

Drain Clean Pudgey sounds like a hidden boss.

The Barkley 1 save import system will probably convince me to replay the original (in Victorian steampunk mode, of course) and get all the secret stuff. I hope there's a bonus for importing your Victorian steampunk save.

Nightmare City is what I'm excited for, since it seems like a big chunk of new content.

I will say that Basketball in the Barkley Universe sounds like it probably got pretty boring over time... and I am not even joking.

I mean yeah I know basketball included super moves and explosions... but the game makes it a point that basketball technology got to the point where games could consist entirely of throws from any part of the court.
