Systematically Desensitizing Dwarfs.
« on: November 28, 2012, 02:54:38 pm »

Has anyone done that? I wouldn't mind getting all of my soldiers or important dwarfs to eventually get to the point where "doesn't care about anything anymore" appears on their status.

Construct an animal chute that drops pets, babies, estranged family members, 10 or 20 z levels onto spikes behind a window. If the soldiers are training in the splatter zone then eventually they'll become psychopathics. However until they stop caring you want to try to balance the bad thoughts out with fancy statues and expensive decorations.

Just make sure you don't drop the babies and kittens on the dwarves.  As of the minecart update this can be fatal.

Assign them trained animals and then kill the animals. Do this one animal at a time. I'm pretty sure that 'lost an animal training partner to tragedy' counts as a tragic thought too, so if you have any specialised animal trainers you can send their animal friends to the butcher's.

Does the puppy chute actually work for creating 'has witnessed death' thoughts? I don't know if random animals are enough to trigger that.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Yes. I've done it before. I will eventually train them up to "Doesn't really care about anything anymore" status, but it takes a LOT of puppies. Its probably MUCH faster if you use dwarves. I used scores of puppies and only got a handful of "Doesn't really care about anything anymore" dwarves. Almost everyone in the fort was "getting used to tragedy," though.

My old militia commander got 'doesn't care about anything' on the first year after killing a few dangerous animals (giraffes) and butchering animals in general on her off time... not sure if this is common or she was just overly sensitive.

I don't think killing things in battle can increase dwarves desensitization. I'm pretty sure the creatures being killed in front of her would have to be a member of her civilization to cause tragic thoughts, and thus traumatization and desensitization. Did she have friends who went out to fight in the giraffe wars with her and got themselves killed in front of her? That does desensitize dwarves pretty fast.

I have no idea whether butchering has any effect. I usually only have a couple butchers in my forts, and I've never noticed them being particularly desensitized, but then, I've never really checked.

Combat desensitizes dwarves.  That is why having a single squad of legendaries with no deaths will still accrue DCAAA

Yeah, combat is the fastest way. After killing about 5 enemies and a few animals my military does not care anymore.

Puppy chutes?!

Dropping babies and pets to their deaths!?

Holy cRap where has this game been all my life?   It only took being raised by my parents to get me to 'Doesn't really care about anything anymore.'

This post lol'ed me to the point of stomach pains.

Although, having your fellow dwarf be crushed by falling kittens in front of you is probably traumatic.

Killing sentient things is the best way - it hardens dwarves quickly, and, importantly, it gives them happy thoughts unlike baby chutes and stuff like that. Combat is normally dangerous, but execution is not.  Has anyone tried turning several dozens of haulers into criminals by making them haul things to trade depot, then appint a dwarf in question  as a hammerer or CotG and pound on them until he cares little enough?
EDIT: a vampire might come handy here, generating crimes that may be assigned to any dwarf you want.
