Effects of changing demographics
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:48:45 pm »

As a mixed uk teenager i am not surprised that the next olympics are being set in brazil. that is all.

Edit: Given current demographic trends, such as recently depicted in the UK census, most of europe is or will suffer from an aging population, immigration is making itself known, atheism is on the rise and christianity on the decline, amongst other social shifts such as an increasing acceptance of homosexuality. One effect of this can, inevitably, be seen in the comment sections on the bbc articles on the census, and on a less localized basis with parties such as UKIP, which will apparently run with gay marriage as one of it's key issues in the 2016 election, amongst immigration, backing ouit of the EU, etc. Bear in mind this is the same party that has "a not racist party" on it's websites front page. Considering that I'm lucky enough to live in england where actually giving more then lip service to that in an election if the economy is in a less then perfect state will fuck you over, yet i doubt that all of europe is in a similar state, if we continue down a similar road the repercussions will be interesting. My original comment was based on the idea that trying to acclimatise the public to the way things are heading is not a surprise, though i may be giving goverments more credit then thier due. On the other hand, there's a strong bit of neccesitty laced in the idea as compared to idealism, so perhaps not.

I raised in the ffc ban thread where several people stated they barely watch tv as to what an longer-living population might mean for tech adoption, and I'd like to hear your insights on other such matters that occur to you. Then we have the likely dropping or further loosening of the one-child policy in china, and  i strongly suspect loosened immigration and/or emigration controls to deal with the gender imbalance between males and females, particularly in the more impoverished areas with its "bare branches" with no prospect of a marriage, given the problems it's causing. I'm also sure you can think of other examples throughout the world, such as India's prospects of overtaking china in population. I'd particularly like to hear more from the American's, since i know little and less about your predictions.

Might be an idea to start my thread with more then a one-liner next time  :P. To work, minions! *cackle*

Try to put more than one line in your discussion topics. It's a bad thing when we have to start guessing for what's going on.

Your first line doesn't appear to match the first one. The Olympic games in Brasil just indicates a change in the balance of power (BRIC countries), it has nothing to do with demographics.

Let me put it like this; acclimatisation is something to be sought after, considering the aging population time bomb that is europe.

Context, man. Context. And sense, I guess. That too, but it's not exactly required.

South America in general is full of a mix of a wide range of demographics. As already seen with the pushing back of the age people receive their pensions here in the UK, people are living longer and it's a well known prediction that they'll be rather a lot of them. 2050 often being bandied about. An oft-proposed solution is immigration, and as this is something that's happening across most of Europe, not much relief is coming from there. I'll leave out the bit from wikipedia saying it's one of or the fastest growing ethnic group, but considering the conclusions i can draw from the more reliable sources it's no wonder that people could be planning ahead to get Europe used to the idea.

As for it being a BRIC, thoughts on whether it will still be 4 letters soon?

I'm trying to draw on a knowledge base which outstrips my own. Hence the space combat thread, which i know next to nothing about, and the same goes for terrestrial combat. In cases like this, i just want to see what you think.

We haven't even gotten to the inevitable Republican collapse/restructuring yet have we?

In light of that...  You being a mixed-race (I assume you mean) UK teenager doesn't appear to me to have much bearing on this at all.  Although I'm assuming you're referring to the European/African/Amerindian hot-pot that forms the 'typical' Brazilian citizen's genetic make-up, and that you relate (proudly, I reckon... and why not?) to this "every colour under the sun[1]" mish-mash, and you reckon it was inevitable that this aspect would draw the bids to them.

At its most simplistic, I think there was more an element of "South America[2] hasn't yet hosted a Games", if anything.  Every other (bidding[3) continent has hosted the games before.  Rio has bid four times, I think, and... hmmm... somewhere else in that area?  Buenos Aries?  I probably need to look this up.

Obviously the bid teams will also have have had to prove that they can do this event.  I forget, though, did Rio also get the World Cup prior to this?  (FIFA has an actual egalitarian "we ideally need somewhere in <foo region> this time round" policy, that shapes the shortlist of bids... plus S.America is a strong participant/host country.)  If so, that might even have tipped the balance somewhat.

As to what actually swung the vote, you'd probably need to get (vaguely honest) answers from those delegates that bid.  I'm not sure that information is so easily obtained, though.

[1] Pretty much literally.

[2] Mexico City has bid a number of times, and succeeded once, which might have 'sufficed' to hit that 'quota' in the past, but realistically it's "Central American", not "South American".

[3] Can't immediately recall any African locale bidding (edit: Sorry, I forgot Capetown's bid, failing against Athens' recent "Olympics coming home" occasion!), and I don't think any Antarctic location has either... ;)

General suspecting governments may have been smarter then usual on this matter, effectively. As for proud; is anyone here really "proud" of much of human history? I have bits, usually the more recent, I'm proud of, but as we all know most of human history is full of utter bastards, to the point where that was the word that first jumped to mind despite despising it because it has a ring to it. As for the republican restructuring; i heard something about America not being majority white much longer? That will be fun.

Fed up with that overly cheerful clairvoyant?  Strike the happy medium!

Far be it for me to complain about TL;DR;ness (and it wasn't TL, and I DidR), with my record in complicated explanations, musings and general 'stream of consciousness' ramblings, but I feel your original minimalist post has now changed from Spartan efficiency to Roman decadence, supping and dining from the horns of plenty and cornucopias (cornucopiae?) of discussion points, and I am minded to ask where the vomitorium is to be found.

Darnit.  Was responding on a point-by-point basis with my own viewpoint, but there's actually nothing I can really coherently address in there.  (As in myself being coherent, in addressing your original.)  As a noted keyboard-rambler myself (and having just snipped five paragraphs, after a certain amount of unsatisfactory editing) I have to take my hat off to you, being unable to successfully extract any particular discussion points from amongst the surrounds.

How about you say something like "I see that there is a general ageing of the population, when you discount incomers (both from abroad and from 'local' rural areas, leaving certain parts of certain countries[1] largely denuded of a Next Generation).  Do you see this situation continuing to the logical conclusion, or might an osmotic effect kick in beyond a certain level of degradation/influx?  Will the situation 'right size' itself once a working ratio of person-to-land-use is properly worked out and met, in this post-industrial and neo-agrarian period of development?".  And that to address what I perceive is your question just in the very short bit until the point at which you bring up atheism.  At which point I could suggest another question.  Unless you're wanting to link atheism more directly, in which case it's a different (more all encompassing) question you're proposing.

[1] Hill farming areas in the UK being the ones that I am most familiar with, but certain notable parts of Italy, Spain, etc are also often reported about.
