Cultural preparations needed for space travel

A. no more anthropocentric since we're inevitably going to run into something better then we are, b., not worshiping said entity, and 3. recognizing you could easily fuck over your species and the planet they're standing on.

Yeah, good luck with that. If we ever find aliens that aren't eldritch starfish, there will be three general reactions:

1. Kill it.
2. Worship it.
3. Fuck it.

Probably in that order.

I think we'd need to start with giving out guides like:

"10.000 ways to recognize alien life without stepping on it"
and such.

But also, we don't really need any of these for spacetravel. Even with warp, the chances that we actually meet alien life are still slim. We'd have more troubles trying to live on different planets, and the troubles that brings with it. It'll be like the colonies all over again.

Unless they are more advanced than we are, in wich case they'll probably colonize us.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

I was talking about space travel without aliens, which is what we'll be seeing for a long time.

What about preparing human colonists for life that isn't Sufficiently Advanced? There's a limit to what you can do with the Navii, but i do wonder how we'll deal with the biological death worlds.

Don't. There 're planets enough out there. Anything that contains life is hands-of scientist-only territory.

Cultural preparation 1:
  • For the greater good (of the species).

Cultural preparation 2:
  • For science (and understanding of the universe).

Cultural preparation 3:
  • For survival and prosperity (kinda obvious).
Cultural preparation 4:
  • For shits and giggles

So imagine a future populated by millions upon millions of scientific dogmatists, collected data for the data throne.

You do realize that 75% will only acculturate #4, with the remainder going for #3 (the prosperity part, i.e. mine the fuck out of that planet and/or open a Walmart on Alpha Centauri). A small percentage will accept #2. Virtually nobody will internalize #1. Most people who have claimed to do things "for the greater good of mankind" over the years have been madmen.

Civil contact with alien lifeforms is clearly an impossible insurmountable goal with that still around. It's not like there is a precedent of belief systems claiming to be right but treating people subscribing to other belief systems with civility.
